I'm at the Cherry Hill Creation Trek con, and Gary Graham will be speaking tomorrow. Most of us know him as Ambassador Soval on Enterprise, or the evil Ocampan Tanis on Star Trek Voyager's "Cold Fire"... or... Detective Sikes on TV's Alien Nation.

So... if Gary was Janeway... would he have found more acceptance in your Trek universe?

Remember... he STILL has to blow up the Caretaker's array and strand them in the DQ... that decision wasn't affected by the sex of the actor but was a fete accompli of the writers/producers.

    So.

    Captain Gary Janeway?

    or

    Captain Kathryn Janeway?

If you had a time machine and no worries about the 29th century Temporal police... what would YOU decree once Bujold left the bridge in 1994?

Still prefer to have Kathryn, simply because it wass great to see a woman in charge of a Starship. It made Trek less sexist which the future in Rodenberry's world is meant to be.

I would love to see him as a Trek Captain.

If we had gotten Gary Janeway then all the "psycho" stuff Janeway did would have been relabeled as "badass" stuff. It's an old story.

JRulez, give that man a kiss from me!! (not really, don't want you to get a stalker rep) As you might know Soval is my favorite Vulcan and I'm thrilled for you that you get to see him! Who else is there? Are you having fun? Tell us everything!!!

Captain Janeway didn't have any romantic relationships because Mulgrew nixxed the subject.

    Sliding doors.

Gary, even a man from that generation, wouldn't have been phased at any direction Voyagers producers chose to do with his characters sexuality... Gay? Abstinent? Married? Hounddogging? Widowed? Complicated? Flexiable? Flittery?

    But...

    Balance.

You bring in Gary and one of theother male characters would have to be switchedinto a girl.

    Ensign Kimmy?

    lt Commander Chakotea?

    lt Commander T'Vok.

    Neelexia?

    Or

    Doctor.

(It doesn't matter how much estrogen you pump into Tom. He's not going to change.)

Graham sat down for the 2 1/2 minute chat during the cocktail party and I did inquire about the Sisko/Janeway story. He said Sisko came down to three guys, and he was 1 of the 2 that didn't get picked.

Janeway came down to 3 guys and 3 gals... I'm not sure if he meant before Bujold was picked or after.

Did have fun with the 4 gals/guy in the autograph line tonight... Eric "The Traveler" Menyuk was hilarious as was Robin Curtis. My friend laughed when Robin saw her carrying a picture of Dr Selar (TNG Vulcan... Suzie Plakson's first role) then looked across the room at Suzie before asking... "Is that redhead Plakson??? I've got to meet her!"

Liked the group we ended up sitting with at the cocktail party, an eclectic bunch and very into all things scifi.

Tomorrow is SIR PATRICK STEWART!

    Consider me officially swooning! ;);)

I'm not necessarily a fan of how VOY was written, but I think they made the right call by having a female captain, and by casting Kate Mulgrew. She's a really wonderful actor -- even when the script left something to be desired, Mulgrew always managed to inject life into it. And she has a very commanding presence -- you can completely believe her as the commanding officer of a starship, as someone able to inspire her people to follow her through the gates of Hell and back.

I can't even place this actor, except that he had dark hair. *shrug*

But regardless of his opinions on his hypothetical Janeway character's sexuality, it still would have been ridiculous to have lizard babies with Tom Paris.

I have no idea who you are talking about. And I dont' want to know. Because I have been to a party, aaaaannnnd so I don't care.

Janeway was as Janeway was. The greatest two words spoken in the entire seven year run of Voyager:

    "I know."

I'm assuming your post was intended to make some kind of sense, but I'm not seeing it. :vulcan:

I haven't watched Voyager in years, partly because for some years I didn't have cable TV, and then I didn't even have a working TV at all. Now I do have both a working TV and cable, but Voyager conflicts with other stuff I watch. So forgive me for not remembering one guest shot on one episode.

And I DESPISE the Enterprise series. I loathe it so much, there are about 2 and a half seasons of it that I've never bothered watching, even once.

I've never watched Alien Nation at all. So I genuinely can't form much of an opinion of whether this actor would have made a good male version of Captain Janeway.

Regardless of whether Janeway was a woman, man, or sentient brussels sprout, the "Janeway and Paris had lizard babies" ending to "Threshold" was MONUMENTALLY STUPID.

Oh Timewalker how can you say that! The lizard babies were soooo sweet.

And we aren't talking about a one shot guest actor, we are talking about a recurring guest star who played a Vulcan rather wonderfully.

Who knows? Maybe we will see him as a Trek captain someday :)

But he didn't play a recurring Vulcan on VOYAGER. I never saw him on Enterprise, at least not that I remember. He only ever had one episode on Voyager, and now that I'm reminded of what he looks like, I really can't see him as a male version of Captain Janeway.

And the lizard babies were not sweet. They were repulsive. But then I find most reptiles repulsive, and this episode was nausea-inducing anyway.

I'm glad they went with a female captain in VOY, and I was pleased that the role wound up going to Kate Mulgrew (having liked her in a previous productions in the past).

Still...there's always going to be a part of me that wonders what it would have been like if they had went with Susan Gibney. There were rumors TPTB ultimately thought she was too young for the role, but I think that would have been interesting aspect of the character if they had gone that route.

Susan Gibney... she played Leah Brahms, didn't she? It was bad enough seeing her in that other role in the Starfleet conspiracy episode. I wouldn't have liked her as yet another character.

We've had numerous Trek actors play different roles. She actually doesn't hold the record for that. In fact, she was cast as Captain Benteen after Mulgrew got Janeway.

I don't see how it would've made that big a difference.
Voyager's problems lied in writing, not the gender of the Captain.

The number of times in the latter shows I caught myself thinking:
"Hey, that Hirogen is Martok!" "Hey, that 22nd century Klingon lawyer is also Martok!"
"Look, cardassian Tebok!" "Oh, here's blue Weyoun!"

But I usually considered it a good thing. Hertzler, Combs, Alaimo and most of the recurring actors were very good.
