Q was based on Trelane, so I think the earlier posts about how the story might go are very good. One thing I want to point out though, is that when they had the cube on the ropes, the TOS cast not not have stopped to have a meeting first.

Now that would have made for an interesting episode.
The Feds figure out a way to resurrect, yet control, the Doomsday Machine and deploy it against the Borg.

In Peter David's TNG novel Vendetta he had the idea that the planet killer was actually a prototype for a device to attack the Borg. In the novel a larger planet killer is launched to go into Borg space to destroy them for good.

That novel also had a sub-plot concerning LaForge trying to "de-program" and reintroduce a young female borg drone into human society. Note that this story was published a few years before "Voyager" debuted.
