Best Hipster Cities

I've always mentally translated hipsterism as "off the rack depth" i.e. lacking real character. Totally different from people who are genuinely idiosyncratically interesting.

I think there are two breeds of hipster. One is genuine in is appearance and interest. The other is just trying to be trendy. It's hard to tell the difference until you actually interact with them on a regular basis.

... HDs are the poseurs who adorn themselves in hipster trappings but shove their nouveau "status" and newly acquired tastes in other peoples' faces and insist on being snotty, obnoxious assholes. Some hipsters can be hipsters and not be pricks about it, getting along and mingling with people outside their clique and crowd. HDs cluster in self-segregated groups that are reluctant to have anything to do with "other people." I've seen it happen, and in all sorts of environments. The HD has a wider territorial range than the American gray squirrel.

... more like middle-class poseurs.

Yeah, you guys pretty much nailed what I was perceiving and trying to explain but failing to: the sheer inauthenticity of it.

Totally agree. Minneapolis has been one of the countries beatnik epicenters for 40 years and is abound with culture. STP is it's whimsically lazy slob of a little brother.

We shouldn't be building the new light rail corridor to St. Paul-there should be a wall built to keep the STP non-hipsters from coming to Minneapolis!

Hey, Are we fellow Minneapolatians? :shifty:

Yes, but to be a tad more accurate, we're fellow "Travel + Leisure's Number 16! Best Cities for Hipsters" citizens!

I live close to the Uptown area, so I've definitely seen my share of HDs in my time...

Hey Neighbor! I live in the Uptown area. I could step out of my apartment and throw a rock randomly, it would likely hit a HD. Hey, I think I just decided on my weekend plans. :p

I'll hand you the rocks. ;) Seriously, though, I live in a university city so have a plague of hipsters as well. They annoy me just as much as those idiots walking around with their trousers around their knees. Perhaps I've not come across a "genuine" hipster, because the ones I've come across are shallow and completely self-centred.

The way I put it is "no one is trendier than a hipster." Although I know plenty of people who appreciate essentially all the cultural hallmarks of a hipster, but don't do it in a pretentious way. If hipsters move towards that, it'll probably lose some of the people who just like to be "special" but will make them not half bad. I have nothing against people who wear chucks and listen to Wilco.

Chucks are the world's greatest shoe. They're not just for hipsters. You can wear them with anything! I regularly wear Chucks as formalwear. Hell, all the groomsmen in my friend's wedding last year wore Chucks. I have another friend who wore Chucks under her wedding dress.

RoJoHen is wise in all things.

Though apparently I am a hipster according to some of my friends. Probably because I've been wearing Chucks for the last 8 years and I have thick rimmed glasses.

I wonder if liking The Phantom Menace makes me a hipster?

I remember when Uptown was cool and tasteful.

A lot has changed in eight years. :p

 I'll have to remember that the next time I'm walking in the area to wear a helmet, just in case.

The biggest problem I have with the hipster style is that you pretty much need the physique of a string bean.
