Your Favorite(Current) Avatars in the TrekBBS

were the size increased I have no doubt the standard of avatars would improve

Actually, 150x150 is almost double what it was a number of years ago. When the board first started, there were no avatars, then it was 80x80. Since then, I believe we've upsized about 4 times. Too much bigger, and the avatar starts to drown out the posts, really. As for file size, 140KB is plenty, unless the lower rankings have lower file size limits. I don't know that one. Your 150x150 jpg is almost 50KB by itself. My animated avatar, with multiple frames, is only 78KB.

Here, I've reduced your file size without reducing much in the way of quality. Your avatar is now 20KB.

When I said size i was referring to file size not dimensions.I did not check but is the option available to use avatars larger than the 140kb by going through a site like photobucket ???

That way the off site is doing the hosting

I addressed the file size issue in my post. I even made note of the fact that your avatar was inefficiently large, in terms of file size, for it's dimensions, and made your avatar less than half it's original file size without a significant reduction in quality.

As for linking larger file size avatars, no. You can't, because the board software will tell you the file size is too big. Quite honestly, a static 150x150 .jpg should never exceed 140KB in file size. If you're wanting to make an animated avatar, it's relatively easy to keep it under 140KB unless it's monstrously complex.

Here are a few of my previously used animated avatars, all well under 140KB:

DashieCry1.gif

MLP2x07-DashieandTwi-140px.gif

ChickenPieForTheRoad-1.gif

RainbowDashCloudJumping.gif

ScrewedEngine-1.gif

THESE were under the 65KB animated gif restriction:

Christmas.gif

thStarscapeReflectionsXX.gif

This was my first animated gif avatar on TBBS, clocking in at a whopping 7KB:
Jesusraiseshields-1.gif

There's no reason why one can't create a nice animated gif under 140KB. It's just not necessary to expand that for now.

Skywalker! That avatar is awesome!
Skywalker has had some very good ones - I remember really liking the "Ghost Rider" av.

I was thinking of changing my av but now that it's been mentioned here twice I'd feel bad about it.
Yeps, same thing. Maybe I will keep Jiji a little ;)
Don't hold on to them forever on my account, though. Both of you generally make interesting image choices, and I end up enjoying them far more often than not.

M'Sharak, you came agonizingly close to making my Top 25 but fell just a smidge short. :p I've been a lifelong devotee of WB Looney Tunes shorts and the Elmer/Bugs standoffs and showdowns have always been some of my favorites of those old cartoons. If you do change your avatar anytime soon might I suggest a "What's Opera, Doc?" theme? Elmer in viking horns has always been a priceless memory of my childhood.

I must say I really liked your Spock-Fro.

teacake reminded me how much I liked my Carl Spock. Im considering bringing him back...not right now, but maybe soon. When the mood hits.

Can you, like, dig the vibes I'm sendin' out, Brother Binary?

I'm no Herbert!

Shatmandu's never failed to be memorable and easily identifiable with the poster, and Samuel T. Cogley's were and remain instantly recognizable and bring a wide smile. Crusher Disciple. Can't forget our favorite bunny over the years! Love that woman. But if I had to go for all-time greatest that I can actually remember with my disjointed memory and after well over a decade in the forums I guess I'd have to go with the one. The only. The dearly departed but never, ever forgotten Mallory.

The senior officers of TOS in WWII Army Ranger fatigues overlooking famous redshirt Ensign Mallory as he stands alone in silhouette atop a lonely hill? It might not seem like the obvious choice because it's not the funniest, the most amusing, the most original really or even the one other posters at the time got into conversations with ol' Mallory about...but it was one of the most personally and easily identifiable with its creator, it was a well made Photoshop and pleasant on the eyes, dealt indirectly with one of my favorite films of the past twenty years and perhaps the greatest WWII movie ever filmed and always reminds me of one of the best damn posters that the boards will ever, ever have. I still have to remind myself from time to time that Mallory's no longer with us...his presence for so many years was a constant pleasure. Though the boards have grown and prospered without him, this place still isn't quite the same without his regular presence and interesting input.

Cheers, Mallory. We still love you, old friend. And wherever you are, thanks for the great times.

Indeed.:mallory:

Who was the guy whose avatar had one female blueshirt ravishing a female redshirt?

Sorry for lowering the tone.

If we ever start a thread on most controversial avatars of all time then ol' CleverWombat would be in the running for at least one of the prizes in that category. In the middle of trying to remember the really great, commendable avatars from the last ten years my mind keeps getting drawn back to some of the controversial ones, and not necessarily because the images themselves were bad or even borderline offensive per se...but at times because they were used under false pretense. Wombat's marsupial with the headband and ninja weapons was a picture he claimed he made himself and then it turned out it was a photo available on the web that he simply appropriated and decided to pass off as his own brainchild. The guy claimed it was his original creation, which caused a little bit of a verbal shitstorm if I remember correctly.

That's happened a couple of times over the years. Not. Cool. Avatars should be lots of fun to post and use and it shouldn't matter if you got the image someplace else. If it isn't already obvious, just come out and say "I found this online and thought it was the bee's knees"...don't lie and say you created the image from scratch and that it was your personal baby, because this is the Google Age. It isn't too hard to find out that you've been lying. ;)

Just thought it might be fun to start up an innocent, relaxing little thread so we can talk about the plethora of interesting, impressive, funny and thought-provoking avatars currently in use and widely seen throughout the different forums of the TrekBBS. What are the avatars you personally find the most amusing or downright funny? Which ones spark conversations with their owners? Do any of them actually make you think? And while this thread is focused on avatars that are currently in use and not those discarded and changed long ago, what in your opinion has been the most memorable avatar that you can remember from your time on the boards, whether it be twelve days or twelve years?

My picks, in no particular order of preference, of the Top 25 that most amuse and/or impress me are those currently possessed by the following posters:

Awesome Possum, Isitnotlogical, Kira's Mom, Sci, trekkiedane, Squiggyfm, J. Allen, Shaytan, Chemahkuu, Alidar Jarok, auntiehill, Locutus of Bored, Flukie, Count Zero, cultcross, macloudt, od0_ital, Emher, Deranged Nasat, ITL, Jenee, teacake, Kirby, OdoWanKenobi and the 4th hanson bro.

I didn't even make the list?!?

I'm insulted beyond reason!!

Who cares if you don't like me, but to NOT like the second best sci-fi show in history is just weird.

;)

My favorite one right now is Locutus of Bored's kitty.

I loved his Darth Vader "The Circle is now Complete" one. I laughed every time I saw it.
I hated it because I was going to make an avatar of that gif until I saw he'd already beaten me to it. :p

But it wouldn't have been the same without "The Circle is Now Complete," so maybe it was for the best.

Thanks guys (and eddie), and sorry for snaking you on that one Skywalker. If it's any consolation Skywalker, I always find your animated avatars awesome and impressive, and I've always loved Calculon, digits.

Temis does a great job of always making her original animated avatars fun and interesting while keeping the consistent theme with her user name and updating it for holidays and so forth. It's impressive.

And Spiff always wears a great one that makes me laugh.

My first AV caused a several page thread in QSF as to if it should be allowable or not. It was an animated confederate navy jack. RevKathy actually hosted it for years for me since I didn't have a way to do it at the time. :rommie:
