I addressed the file size issue in my post. I even made note of the fact that your avatar was inefficiently large, in terms of file size, for it's dimensions, and made your avatar less than half it's original file size without a significant reduction in quality. As for linking larger file size avatars, no. You can't, because the board software will tell you the file size is too big. Quite honestly, a static 150x150 .jpg should never exceed 140KB in file size. If you're wanting to make an animated avatar, it's relatively easy to keep it under 140KB unless it's monstrously complex. Here are a few of my previously used animated avatars, all well under 140KB: THESE were under the 65KB animated gif restriction: This was my first animated gif avatar on TBBS, clocking in at a whopping 7KB: There's no reason why one can't create a nice animated gif under 140KB. It's just not necessary to expand that for now.
I hated it because I was going to make an avatar of that gif until I saw he'd already beaten me to it. But it wouldn't have been the same without "The Circle is Now Complete," so maybe it was for the best.
Skywalker has had some very good ones - I remember really liking the "Ghost Rider" av. Don't hold on to them forever on my account, though. Both of you generally make interesting image choices, and I end up enjoying them far more often than not.
M'Sharak, you came agonizingly close to making my Top 25 but fell just a smidge short. I've been a lifelong devotee of WB Looney Tunes shorts and the Elmer/Bugs standoffs and showdowns have always been some of my favorites of those old cartoons. If you do change your avatar anytime soon might I suggest a "What's Opera, Doc?" theme? Elmer in viking horns has always been a priceless memory of my childhood.
teacake reminded me how much I liked my Carl Spock. Im considering bringing him back...not right now, but maybe soon. When the mood hits. Can you, like, dig the vibes I'm sendin' out, Brother Binary?
Who was the guy whose avatar had one female blueshirt ravishing a female redshirt? Sorry for lowering the tone.
If we ever start a thread on most controversial avatars of all time then ol' CleverWombat would be in the running for at least one of the prizes in that category. In the middle of trying to remember the really great, commendable avatars from the last ten years my mind keeps getting drawn back to some of the controversial ones, and not necessarily because the images themselves were bad or even borderline offensive per se...but at times because they were used under false pretense. Wombat's marsupial with the headband and ninja weapons was a picture he claimed he made himself and then it turned out it was a photo available on the web that he simply appropriated and decided to pass off as his own brainchild. The guy claimed it was his original creation, which caused a little bit of a verbal shitstorm if I remember correctly. That's happened a couple of times over the years. Not. Cool. Avatars should be lots of fun to post and use and it shouldn't matter if you got the image someplace else. If it isn't already obvious, just come out and say "I found this online and thought it was the bee's knees"...don't lie and say you created the image from scratch and that it was your personal baby, because this is the Google Age. It isn't too hard to find out that you've been lying.
I didn't even make the list?!? I'm insulted beyond reason!! Who cares if you don't like me, but to NOT like the second best sci-fi show in history is just weird.
Thanks guys (and eddie), and sorry for snaking you on that one Skywalker. If it's any consolation Skywalker, I always find your animated avatars awesome and impressive, and I've always loved Calculon, digits. Temis does a great job of always making her original animated avatars fun and interesting while keeping the consistent theme with her user name and updating it for holidays and so forth. It's impressive. And Spiff always wears a great one that makes me laugh.
My first AV caused a several page thread in QSF as to if it should be allowable or not. It was an animated confederate navy jack. RevKathy actually hosted it for years for me since I didn't have a way to do it at the time.
