Uh-oh... the opening credits this week used the title The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra instead of just The Legend of Korra. I hope that was a mistake. The Nickelodeon preview for next week still used TLoK, but that's not conclusive.

This was an interesting examination of Korra's fears, and it was good to see her show new facets -- not instantly reacting brashly and aggressively as we'd expect, but showing a more vulnerable side. And when she did let herself get provoked into rashness (as Tarrlok knew she would once the press confronted her), she overcompensated for her fear and got reckless, and it was almost disastrous.

I'm a little ticked off that they went for the villain cliche of "I won't kill you yet because the time is not right," which is often a cheesy and contrived way to make sure the hero survives. But I guess being concerned about her becoming a martyr is a plausible interpretation. Though if he's smart, he'll wait a while and then try to arrange an "accident" that won't be linked to him. Of course, in that case there'd still be a new Avatar born into the Earth Kingdom, but it would be another 17-18 years before that Avatar would pose a challenge, and Amon could accomplish a great deal in that time.

Yeah, Asami is gorgeous -- almost as gorgeous as the actress who plays her, Seychelle Gabriel (who was also Princess Yueh in the Shyamalan movie). And it's good to hear Daniel Dae Kim as her father.

Although Korra cleans up real nice herself. She looked lovely in her party outfit.

As for something being up, I wondered that myself. I'm concerned about the Avatar wearing a team uniform with the Future Industries logo on it. It might create the appearance of favoritism. And I'm wondering if that's the whole reason Mr. Sato wants to sponsor the team the Avatar is on.

Then again, Hiroshi Sato is already the most successful businessman in the Republic, so I'm not sure why he'd need to try to grab onto the Avatar's coattails. But if Councillor Tarrlok wanted a piece of Korra for his own purposes, I'm sure others do as well.

Impossible. At the end of episode 1, we saw Tenzin standing next to Korra at her press conference, and then cut to Amon listening to the conference live on the radio.

Also, how could Tenzin change his voice to sound like Steve Blum? Although I guess if anyone could disguise their voice that well, an airbender could.

Damn. The first series was so much easier to watch. I marathoned the whole thing on DVD!

This "one episode a week" thing is killing me! I want to watch the next one, dammit!

Oh, and I'm intrigued by that vision Korra had after Amon knocked her out. According to the Avatar Wiki, the people she saw in the vision were the adult Aang, Toph, and Sokka. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of that event, and I'm assuming it's the battle with Yukone that Councillor Tarrlok referenced earlier in the episode (otherwise why would that have been mentioned?). There's probably a connection to Amon.

I found 1X4 to be not quite as exciting as the first three, but maybe the initial thrill of new Avatar is just wearing off.

Seems to me that Sato is in league with Tarrlok, he was at his party, that's why he sponsored the team Korra is on. He sent his daughter to "accidentally" run into Mako to set the whole thing up.

I personally hope this isn't the case. Seems like too obvious a twist. I'd rather there be no twist at all and for Sato's offer to the Fire Ferrets to be genuine.

Tarrlok is kind of a douche, but I also hope he doesn't turn out to be a bad guy.

Korra's vision at the end of the episode is the most intriguing thing to me. I can't wait to learn more about everything that has been going on in Republic City.

I saw that briefly, but I thought it was a website address tacked on. The glyphs on the sides look like a stylized "www".

    No ".com", but still...

She does look nice in her traditional garb, but I'd still like to see her dress more like a city girl, the way she did last week when she was in disguise.

I knew I was forgetting something like that. Still, I can see Tenzin knowing something or being involved somehow, as discussed last week. Something does seem a bit shady with him.

I think that the whole episode for Korra dealt with her unlocking the first Chakra, Survival by admitting her fear of Amon. I think this because of the flashbacks she saw of Aang and the Gaang fighting Yukone in Republic City after Amon knocked her out. She started to connect with her spiritual side.
In fact I'd go as far to say that Amon deliberately set up the situation on Avatar Aang Memorial Island to unlock her chakra. I think that he wants Korra to master her spirituality so he can kill her when she is in the Avatar State. Hell I bet at the end of the first season Korra and Amon will duel and Korra will be forced into the Avatar State. As soon as she enters I bet that Amon will pull out a gun and shoot her, or for an even greater twist, shoot her with lightning.

I don't think that holds up. The way the accident happened, she couldn't have seen him coming (he was rather stupidly walking out into traffic from behind a large truck), and she did seem genuinely surprised.

Intriguing idea. That would mean ending the Avatar cycle forever. But that would only make sense if simply taking away her bending would not do so. Do we know that? Does he know that? If so, how?

It was an error. This is the title card from 1x04 from the HD version.

I'd guess that taking away Korra's bending would not end the Avatar cycle. The Avatar spirit seems to be, in a way, a separate entity from the Avatar person. Taking the person's bending abilities away doesn't actually kill the Avatar spirit.

Episode 4 was really good, IMHO.

I think the animation in this show is top-notch. I noticed it a lot last night, especially in Korra's dream sequence.

Anyway, I do think Sato's daughter is setting the brother up (I'm terrible with names). Just too much of a coincidence.

The scene with Amon at the statue was creepy and effective.

    Good show!

I thought this was probably the best episode so far.

They really did a great job of developing her fear and vulnerability in this episode.

Yup, a beautiful young woman who happens to have a rich and politically powerful father falls in love with a poor young man.. that is a classic ruse.

Besides, why is she riding a bike when she obviously can be chauffeured around in a luxury car?

It's also a classic love-story plot, two people from different sides of the tracks falling in love. And Hiroshi Sato did start out just as poor as Mako and built himself up through hard work. It's not like he's a hereditary noble who'd look down with scorn on the working class. So his professed motivation for helping Mako is at least plausible.

See above. She wasn't raised by a pampered, lazy guy who inherited wealth and servants and a sense of entitlement, but by someone who built his fortune through personal effort and initiative. Maybe she was raised with a similar spirit of independence.

Besides, remember what era this is. Internal combustion engines are still a relatively new technology. Going by Wikipedia, the first motor scooter came along a couple of decades after automobiles first went on the market. So a scooter like Asami's might be a cutting-edge luxury item in itself.

The weeks in between episodes have been putting me in the mood to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender again. I'm just kind of picking and choosing episodes at this point, but it makes me wonder how much will change in The Legend of Korra, especially now that it looks like it will be more than one season long. It doesn't look like we're following Amon as closely as we followed Zuko. Amon is just a bad guy so far, whereas Zuko was as much a main character as Aang and Katara. Hell, there were times when Zuko's story was the most interesting thing going on.

When I first watched A:TLA, I had the good fortune of the series already being finished. It's a very different experience having no idea how this new story will unfold or even how long it is going to last.

^ I don't know, but I'm guessing that the current story will be wrapped up in 12 episodes. The creators said that they're going for shorter, tighter arcs and at one point, this 12 episode batch was all that was greenlit.

Yeah, that also has me curious. If this story is over in 12 episodes, what will the next story be about? Will they somehow make it a continuation of the current arc, or will a new threat emerge?

Maybe world tour arc after the first 13.

There was some preliminary art I found on Deviantart that was suppose to be from the second half and it looked like Korra was back in one of the poles with what looked like Mako.

Bryan and Mike are such freaking trolls. Loved the episode despite cringing my way through it. My awkward teenage love years are still a recent memory.
