Another one lost to the dark side! Somebody should do an avatar of a pony dressed as Darth Vader. That rainbow-haired one strikes me as the most evil.

Oh wait...of course there is...awww so cute, a family portrait.

Um...thanks? :wtf:

By the way, changing my entry to be a little more inclusive:

if you'd kept with classic GL, you would have had a vote... but moving to Geoff 'Retcon' Johns where he forced Walt Disney to regurgitate rainbow puke all over the GL universe... sorry, no, but no...

This won't get much love, but I was thinking of my recent Golgo 13 avatars and thought it would be cool if Dr. Quest was his target. I can get away with only one of those universes being sci-fi fantasy right?

the actual PSD on my computer is something like 180mb... its in massive HD... sadly DevArt wouldn't let me upload the full version, had to shrink it down for them lol

it's about 40 odd layers, not including transparencies / shading... took about a week and a half to do lol

If your usual avatar isn't necessarily scifi, then yeah, that's OK.

Um....ok. Never mind the fact that Johns gave a much needed breath of life into the series and turned Green Lantern into one of the most prominent characters in the DC universe. Nor the fact that he took Sinestro from a rather shallow villain, to an actual character with complexities. Whatever, though. To each his own. I love the introduction of the rainbow lanterns.

i can't stand everything Johns did to GL and DC Comics in general... i know i'm not alone in this, as a regular on the GL forums it's a known fact that over 40% of the members there actually stopped reading GL regularly after Johns took over...

he might have brought a lot of new fans to the comic, but in doing so he alienated a lot of the old fans and drove them away from the series... he obviously knew about this as well as he tried to placate the classic fans with the GL:Corps comics that used classic storylines and characters as a base, but he ruined the comic and characters for a lot of classic fans sadly...

Sounds kinda like a "it's different, so it must bad bad" mentality to me. I love me some classic Green Lantern, but I'm also happy to see some things shaken up. We got some interesting new characters, and a whole new world of stories to tell with the characters.

What about the run is so offensive, exactly?

I have no problem with different... different is good... breathing new life into something is good... bringing new fans to something is good... those things are fine, what Geoff 'Retcon' Johns did, was not fine by any stretch of the imagination...

the GL Comics have a long history, not sure how long you've been reading them, i started out back in the mid 80's when Dennis O'Neil was at the helm... but throughout Green Lantern, one of the things that has always been key, always been one of the things that was first and foremost in the writers minds, was respect...

All writers in GL had respect for the previous writers... when Dennis O'Neil came aboard to replace Gardner Fox, he took over his storylines and took note of them, what had been done, what stories had been told before, what Fox had added to the GL universe and mythology, and worked with it for the storylines... that's how it's always been... the new writers come aboard, take note of what the previous writers have done, and then continue on respectfully with the ideas that had been established in the comics for 20, 30, 40 years to build up a mythology...

Now, fast forward to 2006... Geoff Johns comes aboard... he takes one look at the nearly 60 years worth of respectful writing that had come before him, 60 years worth of mythology, storylines, characters and universe that had been written, layers, fleshed out and brought to the fans lovingly... and what did he do with it? He said 'fuck it'... he went through, rewrote 60 years worth of storylines that had been preserved by god knows how many writers, because 'he knew better'...

In my eyes that sort of attitude isn't respectful to the fans or previous writers who worked hard on building up a fully fleshed out universe over so many decades... Geoff Johns just came in and decided that his way of writing was better, so he went back, stole all the ideas that had been around previously, put his own spin on them and said 'no, this is how it happened. I know it was written this way for about 20 years or so, but i like my way better, so we're doing it this way from now on.' Not respectful to fans or writers, and if he hasn't got respect for the previous writers, characters and universe he's working in, then why should any of the classic fans who grew up reading and loving a full mythology of over 60 years worth of comics, pay him any respect?

oh, and just so people know this isn't just me ranting... this sort of 'retcon' is actually a trademark of Geoff Johns... it became such an annoyance in comics that it got nicknamed the 'geoffcon' and it used regularly all over the place now...

Geoffcon

A type of retcon (see retroactive continuity) originated by comic book writer Geoff Johns; generally one that renders entire volumes, years or even decades worth of prior comic book stories invalid. These geoffcons can be done without rhyme or reason, seemingly on a writer's whim or stemming from their personal preferences.

A geoffcon differs from your garden variety retcon in that there is little thought put behind your average geoffcon.

"Looks like fifteen years of Emerald Avenger comics just got geoffconned out."
