Anyone Else Tired of the "wars"?

Back in the late 1970s, President Carter made his (in)famous "MEOW" speech where he called the search for energy independence the "Moral Equivalent of War"

Someone once said that Carter declared war on energy. Energy lost.
It sounded more like he was declaring war on cats.

Or for short: The War on Wars.
How about The War to End All Wars?

Oh, we already fought that one. And a whole bunch of wars after it.

It's because we are americans... We don't loose a war. We may not win, but we don't loose.

So anytime politicians want a never ending cesspool of spending, or a mobilizing force to get the electorate motivated to vote, it has to be a "war". One with now way to win is even better.

We are a war like people. We fetishize war. WHole families are defined by war of one type or another. It has been the corner stone of our nations economy since the civil war, and the corner stone of the media since the spanish american war. Our leaders are birthed from the struggles of it, actual or simply social. Our entertainment looks longly on the "great" periods of war, forgets the bad times.

Sports is war. Chess is war. Our childhoods are defined by "war". Everything from dodgeball, to video games is a competition, a battle to determine who is "the best".

Peace is for pussies, make war.

America, blowing shit up since day one.

Speak for yourself. I'm a bleeding heart with no fondness for war, real or imagined.

I prefer Warthogs...

I'm not talking of course about the wars that involve people trying to do violence against each other for some kind of goal.

I'm talking about the

"War on Women"
"War on Christmas"
"War on Poverty"
"War on Crime"
"War on Drugs"
"War on Jesus (or Christians not certain which is was)"
"War on Illiteracy"

Why does every struggle have to be characterized as a war?

And finally

The "War On Terror". Terror or terrorism is not a target for a war. Terrorism is a means to an end. Would it have killed them to say "War on Middle Eastern Based Islamic Fundamentalists Terrorists"?
I am not tired of it as it is a precise word. There isn't any decent drug POLICY, there is a war with unnecessary victims in the US as well as South America.
There wasn't any smart intelligence operation to deal with Al-Qaeda, we declared total war on them which brought plenty of innocent civilians into the fireline.

It was the Cola Wars that apparantly sent Billy Joel over the edge in 'We Didn't Start the Fire'

When the smoke clears from the Franchise Wars, every restaurant will be Taco Bell.

Wars, whether real or metaphorical, are very powerful ways of identifying "self" from "other", which has obvious benefits from a political/branding perspective.
