NBC and Bryan Fuller remaking The Munsters

I see they're keeping Herman under wraps for now. Probably still waiting to see who gets cast.

No complaints with Izzard as Grandpa. I think they key if they're going to reinvent the thing is to stay clear of actor types that fall too close to the originals. No one will ever replace Al Lewis, so don't try - going with Izzard (and the more suave look shown in those production images) is probably the way to go.

My only hope is I want Herman's appearance to still reflect the Jack Pierce Frankenstein Monster make-up. Not saying the guy has to be a clone of Fred Gwynne, or look like he has a bad Halloween mask on like John Schuck did in Munsters Today, but there are ways they can do the Pierce makeup that will work in 2012. For example, the Van Helsing film I thought updated the Pierce look quite effectively. It'll depend on who they cast. If he wasn't already occupied I'd agree with others that Patrick Warburton would be perfect for the role. Brad Garrett too. If they want to go the "relative unknown" route, the fellow who played Lurch in the Canadian remake of The Addams Family a few years ago would work well.

Nothing bad about them, but kind of generic. I was expecting a bit more eccentricity.

It seems like the Munsters have gotten a bigger house now. But I like the designs and since Fuller mentioned other monsters from the old Universal series, I hope that some of them will pop up too.

I like Jerry O'Connell, but, he wouldn't have even been on my long list for the part, let alone a short list or actually cast. I wonder what he brought to the table in the Screen Test to warrant being chosen? Will they cast Lily shorter to make up for the 3 inch difference between O'Connell and Gwynne? It will be very strange if Herman doesn't tower over Lily. Eddie Izzard, I think could indeed be a good Grandpa.

This thing could be an inspired riff off the original, or a complete disaster with the very different choices being made. I wasn't really all that interested in this, but, I just may have to check it out to see if it works, or just how much of a trainwreck it'll end up being.

As far as O'Connell's height goes, he could always wear lifts to give him the Frankensteinian height that Gwynne had.

However, is a guy like O'Connell, with his leading man looks really going to wear Jack Pierce inspired Frankenstein makeup? I say absolutely not. I'd put money down that he's going to be a very normal looking Herman Munster.

He''ll maybe have the bolts in his neck, perhaps some stitches visible in shirtless scenes, but certainly not the classic green skinned human corpse with a square head, that we all know and love.

This version of The Munsters seems more Addams Family than it does Munsters.

To me, the important thing is that O'Connell and Izzard are both good actors. I've no problem with them departing from either the visual or behavioural template of the 1960s show. I'd much prefer to get something like this than the lame retread tv show from the 1990s, to be honest. So this project continues to interest me.

It should be noted that Jerry O'Connell is only 3 inches shorter than Fred Gwynne so the height isn't really an issue. Also as it's a reboot this Herman may not be quite the same character as the original was so they may have been looking for someone different than Gwynne.

Lily Munster has been cast:

WTF! :rommie: Why didn't Fuller just hire Lee Pace if he was going non-traditional. Pace is certainly tall enough for the role.

I'm not terribly surprised that they've opted for a Hermann with leading-man-looks. Gotta interest the female audience somehow, right?

The actors playing Eddie and Lily certainly have the right look for their roles.

However, is a guy like O'Connell, with his leading man looks really going to wear Jack Pierce inspired Frankenstein makeup? I say absolutely not. I'd put money down that he's going to be a very normal looking Herman Munster.
At this point, all preconceived notions will have to be chucked. There's no telling how this sucker is going to turn out.

I'm starting to warm up to this show, after blowing rather cool on it...Hey, at least it's not another cop show, right?
