I read an interesting news article yesterday about prop 209, Califonia's ban on affirmative action. It was challenged by civil rights groups after enrollment of Black and Native American students dropped by about 50% the year following its enforcement.

I haven't really made up my mind on what I think or feel about the timeline of removing affirmative action, but I can say that in four years at a major university, I never met another Native American student (and I'm only half).

Why do you think the GOP is so deathly afraid? Most "people of color" don't vote for their racist asses.

I haven't really made up my mind on what I think or feel about the timeline of removing affirmative action, but I can say that in four years at a major university, I never met another Native American student (and I'm only half).

Well, the Supreme Court case that upheld limited affirmative action for the University of Michigan Law School didn't have quotas, but they tried to achieve a "critical mass" so students wouldn't feel like representatives of their race. However, they never really sought a critical mass of Native Americans, just African Americans. This might just be pragmatic concerns.

So when an ethnic group becomes the majority it can't be discriminated against anymore?

Wow, I wonder how apartheid worked then.

There's an old joke about South Africa: It's tough being a minority -- especially when there are more of you than there are of them!

As for "people of color", we're all people of color.

Except albinos.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but albinos lack melanin, the pigment that gives skin, hair and eyes their color. Ergo, referring to albinos as "people of color" is like calling atheism a religion.

This. A very light color is still a color. Less melanin just means less pigment, it doesn't mean lack of color.

Scientifically speaking:
White is the presence of all colors.
Black is the absence of all colors.

Still, human beings aren't pure white or black, so the point is moot.

Depends on what you are describing. If paint pigment, black is all colors mixed and white is absence of color. If light, black is absence of color and white is all colors.

Well, yeah, but short of a Star Trek episode, people aren't pure black or pure white. They fall into some kind of pigmented color. Even if that pigment is practically non-existent, it doesn't even come close to a pure white.

Will ift fade away by then or it will be aplied to white people?

Once white people are enslaved and mistreated for decades and centuries after the end of slavery we can talk about the discrimination of white people in the US that needs to be amended in any fashion. Until then your point is fairly academic.

Because you'd have to get to know them, killing prejudices and creating understanding. It's far easier to label whole groups of people.

Nothing. I just meant in the general sense. I don't see how using words such as "white" or "black" is racist, particularly if that's what you happen to be. I'm both a white man, and a disabled man, and I'm not offended if people refer to me in those terms, and I have black friends who feel the same.
