Bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs has died

^ Agreed. Somehow he seemed older, though I didn't know he was still around.

He was an established artist when Beverly Hillbillies came out, and that was 50 years ago.

The only "country" music I really like is bluegrass. Old school bluegrass that is.

RIP.

Not many people can lay claim to revolutionizing the whole cultural perception of an instrument. Before Mr. Scruggs started reaching audiences with Bill Monroe's band, the banjo was for the rhythm section or comic relief.

As a kid I always got a kick out of seeing him and Lester Flatt appear on The Beverly Hillbillies with their glamorous young TV wives. You could tell they were not actors! But they always seemed like good sports.

RIP Mr. Scruggs.

I didn't see this thread and started my own. D'oh

I don't remember the wives but I always found it surreal how these two guys just showed up and started playing the theme song. :)

As much as I like "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" It was "Pearl, Pearl, Pearl" that liked hearing.

Rest in Peace.

They even where cool enough to cover Bob Dylan.

Netflix has the Flatt and Scruggs show available for streaming. Mostly music with some easygoing laid-back country charm (and Martha White flour recipes like Knik Knak Stix :)).

Thanks for that heads up, I'll have to get that in my queue right away. I've only seen about 1 episode and I loved it. But then I pretty much love any and all things "old time country" related.

Watching an episode right now, both with glee and a lot of sadness too. Not just for Earl, but for Lester too. :(

I didn't know they did the Petticoat Junction theme too.
