March 1962-March 2012: article recounts the origin of Doctor Who

Although everyone marks Nov. 23, 2013 as the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who, its true golden anniversary is March 2012. That's because back in March 1962 the BBC began compiling a report on the feasibility of producing an ongoing sci-fi series, and this led to them commissioning Doctor Who a year later.

The Doctor Who News Page has posted a cool article on this, and also a survey of some of the antecedents of Doctor Who.

Thanks for the link! I assume there will be follow-ups to this article as we continue to reach the 50th anniversaries of significant pre-production events.

Sincerely,

Bill

Definitely. I'm sure the Doctor Who News Page will be doing more, as will other sites, though the main stuff is going to start in about a year when we reach the 50th anniversary of things like Sydney Newman and CE Webber writing the original show bible, etc.

I don't count my anniversary from the day I got engaged, I count it from the day I got married.

Likewise I'll stick to November 23rd, 1963 in the case of Doctor Who.

No offense. ;)

Feasibility check, that's more like First date/dating. March 2013 (A year after March 1962's 50th) would be the Engagement anniversary when they commissioned, and Nov 23 would be the Wedding Anniversary :)

But, hey, this close, any excuse for a party to keep us occupied until the actual Anniversary :D

I don't count the 300 days before my birth when half of me was produced as a Birthday. Anniversary and Birthdays are the days when things got real.

Doctor Who treats its anniversary from the day we first kissed, I treat it as the day we were first physically intimate together...

Oh yeah and mine's first...

Lord I hope someone gets that!

:techman:

Or should I say...

Agreed! Although I appreciate the work the OP did in finding the article in question and bringing it to everyone's attention. Good job there!

Fair enough. Just bear in mind that without the events of March 1962; April 25, 1962; May 1962; June 30, 1962; July 25, 1962; Dec. 12, 1962; January 1963; March 26, 1963; March 29, 1963; April 26, 1963; May 15, 1963 and August 20, 1963 (let's see how many of these dates the DWNP catches) there would have been no November 23, 1963 to celebrate 50 years later. ;)
