A lesson I learned the hard way about Anime

And I thought I get peeved when people call Family Guy "The Family Guy".

Seriously people, there is no "The" in front of the title of that show!

There is a strong snobbish/elitist mentality among some anime fans. There is a small (but usually quite vocal) segment that does regard all anime dubbed in English as inferior (if not blasphemous by some) and wouldn't touch such productions with a ten-foot pole.

Anime fans, like any other fandoms, have people that just need to get a f***ing life, yeah. I can understand the need to offer a friendly term correction but the misplaced animosity I can't.

There are, however, still safe haven's out there for sane fans to discuss things on message boards.

Usually you can just select the audio you want on the DVD.

There are good dubs like GITs, Bebop and Big O, but the bad ones (mostly the ones with JYB) outnumber them.

You'd think so. But in a lot of the anime boards or threads I visit, I tend rather broad generalizations (or rather declarations) that all dubs are bad.

I tend to see statements like this too. But I would submit that this applies to anime in general, not just dubbed ones. Heck, that can apply to a lot more than anime, IMO.

The problem is they sometimes do and take that same "zeal"/fanaticism to a different aspect of life (politics, religion, whatnot) giving a different group of people a headache interacting with them.

And yes, dub vs. sub is a contentious divide and so many anime purists don't understand what it takes to get foreign cartoons over here (how niche their tastes are). Of course, that's an idealism vs. pragmatism divide and they want only absolute purity, any change to make it more palatable no matter how small like localization is tainting (like a certain "one drop" position held by many in the past in the US). Of course, sometimes in the adaptation, the changes can go too far from the original material and alienate others, but that's veering from adapting it for a different culture to increase familiarity/recognition to trying to make it mainstream. Yeah... dealing with anime fans as a crowd is like trying to play around a hornet's nest that's already been jostled once. If you like it, it's best to find some level heads to discuss it with.
