OK. Excelsior J anyone?

Just a little something I tossed together last night. I haven't posted anything here since September 2011. I practically had to re-learn how to use my drawing program!

Mind you, she's JUST a WIP. I haven't even given much thought to how big she'd supposed to be.

I take it that this is your take on a possible futureverse like the Enterprise-J from Azati Prime fame? As Arte Johnson's german soldier used to pronounce from his Amazon jungle hideout: very, very iiiiiiinteresting!

I'm just exploring the studio space.

What made this one "pop" for me, was when I decided to monkey around with the drawing program, and jokingly shrunk down an engine nacelle down to a silly size, compared to the saucer. Then I said, "hmmm.. this actually just might work." I shrunk 'em BOTH down, tinkered with the geometry of the back end of the secondary hull, and here you go.

Yeah, I agree. Before I even opened the thread, I remembered your future Enterprise design, and this is the exact shape that popped in my head.

It looks very derivative of your previous work.

okay, seeing as how every post you've made is seemingly a direct copy of someone else's post on the same thread, I'm going to assume you're some kind of bot.

now, where's that report button gone?

[edit] oh, and erifah, I think it looks good! though as others have pointed out, it could be a bit more... different. but it is just a WIP after all.

I'm wondering if anyone will judge it on its own terms, and not in comparison to what's gone before it...

Forgive sojourner. He wants every ship to be a unique design unlike anything that's come before. He's not a big fan of continuity or consistency.

I like it....and I don't find anything wrong with thematic similarities.

The one thing that I never liked too well was the move to smaller nacelles. To me, especially from certain angles, the Enterprise-D looked awkward. Huge saucer and tiny nacelles.

What about the idea of a return to larger structures that look like nacelles, but the actual propulsion units are only an integrated part (such as a slim part running along the top surface) and the rest is actually used for other purposes....virtually anything, in their interiors.

I would think that by a certain point in development, the idea that the propulsion units had to be separate from the other parts of the ship due to emissions that would adversely affect the crew would be a problem that would be eliminated.

Thanks for the input.

I think I'd have to branch into two separate designs if I went with larger nacelles. I was specifically thinking of Probert's huge saucer/tiny nacelles when I did this one, and how to push the envelope.

By taking it out-of-balance, it seems to suggest something high-tech and/or purposeful is going on; there's a reason its designed that way - and who knows why. Maybe the nacelles are balanced - but not by volume, but by mass. Maybe the warp coils are forged from pure neutronium!

Quite the opposite actually. I like continuity in design and consistency. Repetitiveness on the other hand...

Least I had an honest opinion.

It's damn near the same image, just with slightly shrunk nacelles and less detail.

I think sojourner is correct and/or, at least, giving an honest assessment.

What, the other opinions are dishonest?

It's nowhere near "the same image"... fresh sheet of e-paper, completely from scratch, and I didn't even have any other pics up within eyesight.

Then you did a good job of reproducing it subconsciously. The art is good, just the same if you look at the image I linked from your other thread. At this point I'll be curious to see how you continue to develop this design in a different direction.

As for the "honest" comment, that was meant more for Ziz, who entered the thread for the sole purpose of commenting about me rather than the art.

Over the years, from time to time, I have actually purposefully tried to re-create my favorite works strictly from memory, then compared the new with the original. It gives me interesting insights into the way my own brain works - namely, the differences between what I think I remember and what actually was, and the battle between left and right hemispheres.

When remembering something, I suspect my dominant left brain has in mind a symbolic, iconic, idealized version of reality, then the right brain just sighs quietly, and tries to make what it is given to work with look good.

I'm not going to judge the design until the OP whips up a side view. It's hard to tell how it looks from a single angle.
