History orders Vikings scritped series

Temis the Vorta

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Game of Thrones and Spartacus seem to have inspired a barbarians fad! :D

What, actual history on the History Channel???

The series will chronicle the extraordinary and ferocious world of the mighty Norsemen who raided, traded and explored during medieval times.

...

“People think they know about the Vikings – we see references to them all the time in our popular culture from TV commercials to football teams – but the reality is so much more fascinating and complex, more vivid, visceral and powerful than popular legend. We will explore the mysteries of the Vikings – the adventures they took and the people who led them. And we will start to understand a past that is very much part of our collective DNA today.”

Sounds promising. Somehow I suspect we don't really know ANYTHING about how the Vikings really lived. We think they were just savages with horn helmets but that can't be even close.

Now if this series has a cameo by Jim Caviezel as Outlander I will be very suspicious.

I've actually been wondering when they were going to do something like this. For a while now, The History Channel has been recreating historical stories--namely battles--using impressive CGI animation, and they have used actors before in other recreations, such as the Battle of Thermopylae...

Sadly the announcement proves it's not going to be that accurate- the brutal raiding and pillaging and stuff was actually a relatively minor part of Scandinavian life of the period...

OTOH, it sounds like it could be fun.

What about my ancestors, the Danish Vikings?

Still, this will be worth a look-see. Not enough good programming going on nowadays.

Any chance of Viking UFOs?
There’s always the possibility . . .

Wow. History Channel is doing a show about history?
They air all of their history shows during the daytime hours on weekdays. They rely on the reality show stuff for primetime and the frequent marathons on the weekends.
No, they show their lumberjacks and truckers during the day, too. I usually check to see if there's anything worth recording. I think it's rather telling about their current programming philosophy that most of the history programs on their On Demand section are listed under "specials."

Too bad they had to cancel the Kennedys.

I dont understand the whining. The Kennedys like almost all politicians were scumbags, whats the big deal?

Well, for starters they didn't have horned helmets.

5 million quatloos say they'll have horned helmets in this show. How else will people know they are Vikings?!?!

To settle the issue of whether History shows history during the day, here's the lineup starting at 2pm today:

MonsterQuest
more MonsterQuest
still more MonsterQuest
and even more MonsterQuest
Bigfoot: The Definitive Guide
American Restoration (show about restoring old junk)
a show where Larry the Cable Guy uses GPS enhanced dogs to track feral pigs
and then repeats of same into the night

So it's hardly a History Channel. More a monsters, rednecks and feral pigs channel, with a slight historical element to the old-junk show. You could use that excuse for Pawn Stars, too. I miss the Nazis. :(

^^ Yeah, I just looked up tomorrow's schedule and they've got marathons of Swamp People, Mudcats, American Restoration and a couple of episodes of Larry. Which is pretty consistent with the type of stuff I usually see when I check them. Planet Green is a much better channel for history shows these days.

I just started watching recently and they've had quite a few Ancient Egypt shows.

Earlier that day, however:
Incredible Disasters (a look at history's most devastating disasters)
Crude (the history of oil)
Moden Marvels: Tuna (a review of the Tuna industry)
So it's hardly a History Channel.
It's still a History Channel, just not all the time. Very few basic cable networks do show the same kind of programming all day long.

Tomorrow morning:
Nostradamus
A marathon on the history of UFO sightings and reports
The USS Sequoia
A look at The Seven Signs of Apocalypse
Apocalypse Island (a look at the ancient Mayans and their 2012 predictions)

Planet Green is a much better channel for history shows these days.
H2 (the second History Channel; formerly known as History International) is even better.
