James Cameron to attempt a dive to the Mariana Trench - alone

the sub reminds me of the mothership from the Homeworld games

can't wait to see the footage he gets . . . I've always been fascinated by the deep sea

James Cameron is trying to equate himself with Neil Armstrong.

Yeah, he's that Canadian director who started to go a bit gaga many years ago with Titanic, but him doing something that hasn't been done in over five decades is a real achievemen, and we know more about the surface of our Moon than we do of our deep ocean. We can blame the comparative lack of sea exploration on Vice Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, the US Navy jealously guarding its sea charts for its submarines, and space exploration taking the spotlight (though in the last three decades space exploration has been gradually losing steam anyway).

As long as he doesn't wake up Cthulhu while he's down there.

The Trieste went there first, crewed by Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard. They weren't overblown ego-maniacs.
