Hawaii 5-0: The Second Season Begins!

Oh, man, the Steve/Danny bromance was in full force tonight. Every scene they were in together last night just had me busting out laughing. Next week James Caan shows up and wow...that's a pretty funny preview. James and Scott Caan look like they had a blast working together.

They totally cracked me up, too! Long live the Steve/Danno bromance! Seriously my favorite part of the show. I just love Steve's obsession with every last detail of Danny's life. I also wonder if Danny will end up staying with Steve again--surely his free stay at the Hilton has run out. Any why does Steve need a house sitter anyway?? It's not like he has a pet. :D

The banter and bromance is really what makes the show work for me. Usually I'm only marginally invested in the cases... they're interesting enough to hold my attention, but it's the characters I really love about this show.

Can't wait to see James Caan on the show next week! :D

I thought last night's episode was really fun! Cool to see James Caan on the show with his son--the role was great for him. His interactions with Steve and Danno were so funny. Love how he called Danny "Muscles" and asked them if "you two hens peck at each other all the time." Fun stuff--I just enjoy the hell out of this show.

Missed Monday night so I'll catch the re-do tonight -- and James Caan guesting..? Can't wait!

James Caan was awesome last night. They definitely need to bring him back again. You could tell that the Caans and O'Laughlin had a real fun time on the set together.

Yeah, it was fun watching all of them! I wonder how much of it was ad-libbed. I know some of the Steve and Danno bickering scenes are... I wonder if any of the ones with James Caan were, like the bit at the end when Danno calls Steve an "animal" and Tony offers to be their marriage counselor.

Yeah, I totally agree. Only on Hawaii Five-0 can you go from arrested suspect to trusted team member in less than one hour  The Caan's were really fun together (though their mannerisms were so similar its hard not to notice!) I meant to try and identify the shop owner (?) in the first half... he looks familiar and perhaps has ties back to 5-0 TOS. Miller was chatting with O'Reilly a few weeks back about his appearance - yikes, Miller said nothing about getting nuked in the first 5 minutes lol

As I suspected, the shop owner was 5-0 superstar, Jimmy Borges, who did so many of the original series episodes. I love NU5-0 for reaching back and doing these cameos. Plus, this episode is perhaps a little homage to the sixth season classic, "Retire in Sunny Hawaii -- Forever" which starred James MacArthur's real life mother, Helen Hayes also sleuthing around with Steve and Danno :)

Me, too. It was nice to see Al Harrington back again as Mamo (roleplaying as King Kamehameha, no less!) in last week's episode, and Doug Mossman popped up earlier this year.

The banter between Alex and the two Caans was priceless, and James Caan definitely needs to become a recurring character. Also loved the scene at the beginning with Danno and Grace at the Hilton's pool. If this is a preview of what's to come when Grace is old enough to date, it actually makes me hope the new Five-0 has a run as long as the old one.

Also, did anyone else notice in the end credits, the two stoners who hijacked Max's van were actually listed as "Dumb" and "Dumber"?

I froze the replay in the end credits trying to find the shop owner and noticed "Dumb" - showed my daughter and we burst out laughing. The Comcast navigation was too messy, so I just went to the Five-0 homepage and found there that it was Borges (and by the way, I'm ashamed of myself for not recognizing him quicker.) There aren't many surviving original cast members and I certainly knew he was one of them.

I recognized the face, but not the name. I'm almost done with the final season of the original series, and it's great how the same faces pop up over and over again (my favorite is Kwan Hi Lim, who appeared well over 25 times, possibly more, usually as a bad guy; sadly, he died in 2008).

He also played Lt. Tanaka on many episodes of Magnum p.i.

I think it's ironic that the current Steve McGarrett character shares a lot more with Magnum than he does the original McGarrett.

And dammit, I want a new Magnum P.I. show. Someone needs to bring the pornstache back into fashion.

I'm still in the middle of season 10. I own seasons 1-9 and catching 10-12 on Amazon prime :) Guys like Lim, Borges, and several others were practically part of the crew they got used so much. Very similar re-casting of actors as shows like Kung Fu and The Rifleman which, of course, only adds to the charm.

I caught the Dumb and Dumber thing and that cracked me up.

Danny will be beside himself when Grace goes on her first date. No doubt Steve will stick by his side and distract him with a good argument. Not to mention "Uncle Steve" will be sure to tell the poor guy taking Grace out that he owns grenades and knows how to use them. The humor really makes this show. It's nice that it doesn't take itself too seriously.

I just finished Season 12, and unlike other shows I've watched from beginning to end on DVD (Buffy, Angel, nuBSG), I don't feel the same sense of fulfillment that I've seen it all and loss that there's no more to see. Rather, I feel like I've run a marathon, and I'm just glad to be at the effing finish line. :p Season 12 was particularly excruciating.

Hawaii’s Five-0 task force will be without its leader for a little while. Hawaii Five-0 star Alex O’Loughlin will miss at least one episode of the CBS crime drama for a stint in rehab. “Alex is taking a short break from Hawaii Five-0 to receive supervised treatment for prescription pain medication due to a recent shoulder injury,” a rep for the actor said in a statement.
The series, which is ahead of schedule, is now shooting episode 20. Production will proceed as planned, with Hawaii completing its Season 2 order. “We respect and support Alex’s decision,” CBS Studios, which produces the series said. “Everyone at CBS Television Studios and Hawaii Five-0 wishes him well and we look forward to his return.”

I do as well. I wonder how they'll explain why his character was out of action.
