It's gonna be Khan (pretty damn sure now with the pics)

Gary 7's life on his pre-earth planet is one story I'd like to know more about. I'm happier about Gary 7 being in the movie than Khan I must say.

You wouldn't be the only one if that were true. Gary Seven was one of the most interesting guest characters in the entire history of TOS. Heck, NBC came this close to creating a spinoff series about the adventures of Gary and Roberta Lincoln on 20th century Earth but plans fell through. Gary would make a far more appealing character in the new film than a Khan or Arne Darvin, though Gary in TOS was more of a cerebral, quiet type who defeated his opponents through the use of advanced alien technology, not physical combat. That's one of the reasons I don't think Cumberbatch is anyone like Gary Seven. Gary Mitchell would be far, far more likely, but after the recent comic series it doesn't seem like that will be the case either.

Hmm...I am liking the Gary Seven idea, and, as we have only evidence of one fight scene, there's not much one can conclude about the overall character. After all, Cumberbatch is actually known for playing the more quiet cerebral type you mentioned. Also, it would gel with Cumberbatch hinting that his character might not actually be a villain. And they haven't named who Alice Eve is playing yet, right? She could be Roberta Lincoln.

^It'd be so awesome!

ETA: I wonder if they'd keep the cat...it is rather adorable to watch Spock stroke a...ugh, my mind is going places it really shouldn't.

When Alice Eve was cast they said she was playing a new to the canon character. Of course that could be misdirection.

Okay folks, once again: why would they audition Hispanic actors to play Gary 7?

There's only two roles you'd look at Hispanic actors for: Khan or a Klingon. Maybe Romulans too. But not Lord Garth, not Gary Mitchell, not Trelane, not Gary 7!

But then there's the PC factor working against Khan (assuming he's "the" Khan). So that leaves us with the turtleheads, or smoothheads, but definitely the Klingonheads.

I'd go with all this, except del Toro was originally cast as Moe in a movie reboot of "The Three Stooges" (honestly, for real). If that could've happened, then who knows what role Abrams wanted del Toro for? We're the ones reading so much into it.

The thing here is if Cumberbatch did dye his hair as a few think he did, and obviously bulked up a bit for this role, then you'd think both were done to look more like an existing Trek character. I mean why dye your hair for a new role you're creating? Why bulk up just because you're very strong? Vulcans are very strong, but Nimoy and Quinto are hardly muscular. Neither were the Klingons in Trek. But, Khan was more or less buff.

Who knows why they got the idea to go after del Toro or audition Cumberbatch. But I do recall reading Cumberbatch blew them away at the audition. Mantalban played Khan with a certain Shakesperean cadence and gravity that Cumberbatch could've picked up on and ran with. Could be he did an unexpectedly great Khan. We'll see. ;)

If it was Del Toro or this guy in the pics, we'd all be convinced it was Khan.

Or a Klingon...

Because the director wants you to, maybe? And I think modern expectations of Klingons (or any badass space foes) are that they're pretty muscular.

He did? I always thought he was too cornball for that.

A lot of Klingons in the TNG era were burly, muscular fellows. I wouldn't be surprised in the least if J.J. wanted one or more of his actors to bulk up in order to convincingly portray a Klingon soldier. And since the timeline was changed in 2233, who says a Klingon of the J.J.verse has to still look thin and have the build of your average adult human male? The Empire could have found the cure for its ENTERPRISE-era physical mutations earlier than it did in the Prime timeline. Even if we get one or two smooth-headed TOS style Klingons in the film they don't have to be whisper-thin fellows in skin-hugging velour and leather costumes like we saw on TOS. They could be beefier looking to reflect the fact that they're supposed to be warriors.

Well, at least I can still imagine Benedict Cumberbatch stroking a cat seductively. sigh

Maybe this was mentioned up thread, I don't recall and the thread's getting too long to reread everything, but if Cumberbatch is Khan, while the Starfleet clothes are explainable, what about his Starfleet sideburns? Before everything apparently went terribly bad, did Khan get a shave and a haircut aboard the Enterprise?
