James Luceno's Darth Plageuis Cover Revealed!

^Yeah, anything professionally published by a major company with an official license for that franchise is not fan fiction. Fan fiction is the stuff that amateur writers put up on the internet for free.

I don't normally read Star Wars novels, but I am interested in this one. Although, I sort of object to the basic idea behind it, too -- Palpatine is not a psychologically realistic character, more an archetype of evil, and his power as an archetype comes from his lack of psychological development; the more we learn about the character, the less intimidating he seems, the less of an "evil blank slate" he seems. It's like how in monster movies, the more we see of the monster, the less scary it is.

Still, I do find the premise intriguing. I may end up reading it.

Well, then you'll presumably be somewhat pleased to discover that
Palpatine is portrayed as sociopathic even at a young age, so he still retains the archetype-of-evil dynamic to a certain extent.
Mr Light said:
Did Plageuis and Sidious conceive him when they did their ceremony, creating the ultimate Sith?
I don't think the ceremony they did together was about creating an ultimate Sith; it was about further unbalancing the Force. When Plagueis tried to create a Force-user, he was alone; it was a different attempt ( though in the same general timeframe ).

Well,
if we're writing Palpatine in any detail at all, it basically goes without saying that he's going to be portrayed as a sociopath. The kinds of things he does canonically demand nothing less. But that makes it a bit less scary, too, because sociopathy is a real psychological condition -- and anything that's understood, even partially, is less frightening as a result. So if he's a sociopath, then he's no longer an archetype. In some ways, that's why film is the perfect medium for depicting this character--we never get inside his head and only ever see him from the POV of other, non-sociopathic characters, and therefore never fully understand him. But if a novel gets inside his head, this almost demands a depiction of Palpatine as suffering from sociopathy.

This novel has a lot of great background material on Palpatine. It is great for fans of the character.

I know the audio book is on youtube...I stated in my post I checked out the preview, it was a general question. I wanted to know if anyone else had listened to it, not where to listen to it.
