Which one is the best Trek audiobook?

Several years ago, I had a job that required some long-distance driving. My wife gave me an audio CD adaptation of the Star Trek game Borg, with John Delancie providing the voice of Q. As I recall, the actual narrator was a different character, but there were a lot of authentic sound effects and (I think) a few other actors dramatizing parts of the story. I'd never played the game, but I enjoyed the audio adventure and listened to it a few times.

Years ago, I listened to a dramatic audio presentation of Stephen King's "The Mist", complete with sound effects (William Sadler, who played Sloan in some DS9 episodes, played the main character). It was about an hour long and sounded similiar to old radio dramas. Would be interesting if Trek books could be taken in the same format. It's not like they have any shortage of sound effects they could toss in there.

Which leads me to a question for the assemblage...for any of you with long commutes, do you ever listen to audio tapes or MP3s or whatever method you listen with to audio recordings of the Trek shows or movies? In an old job, I used to have a 45-minute commute...perfect for listening to a TNG episode on an audio tape and letting the ep play off the back wall of my mind during the commute. Or maybe I'm just weird like that.

^ I'm a little surprised we haven't seen an "official" Star Trek audio drama series, akin to what Big Finish has done with Doctor Who. Not necessarily stories with one of the existing crews, but an original ship / crew / mission. I think if you focus on a couple of the crew (your Big 3, so to speak) it would be very workable.

Howard McGillin.

According to John Ordover, after the lackluster performance of the three "Captain Sulu" original audio dramas, Simon & Schuster relinquished their license to make original audios. It was available to a newcomer licensee, and probably still is.

How wll does Cacophony fit Trek canon?

It was the least interesting of the three. The cacophony of alien voices was more to promote the cleverness of the so-called "3D sound" rather than to serve the plot.

Does Cacophony contradict anything?

I don't remember, but Sulu was Excelsior's captain for a looooong time. Plenty of room to have Chekov, Chapel, Rand, Tuvok, Valtane and Lojur coming and going in prominent positions, as depicted in ST VI, "The Tabukan Syndrome" (comics), "Flashback" (VOY) and "The Lost Era", "The Captain's Table" and "Forged in Fire" novels.

I kicked this very idea around at Big Finish with producer Gary Russell for a while several years back, but it never got off the ground. I think the cost of the rights were prohibitive. Later I floated the concept with Simon & Schuster Audio, even talked about it to Startrek.com as a possible webcast show, but no joy. Audio drama seems to be a hard sell to the American market.

Still, I'd love to work on a Trek audio show, I think it would be excellent, a full cast play or even something like the Doctor Who Companion Chronicles "enhanced reading" format...

That's a damned shame - there would be some mileage in this over here. Titan in particular springs to mind.

I'd probably check them out, especially if they had involvement from the Lit authors or cast members from the shows.
