CSI (Vegas): Call it a Day?

Do you think they should pull the plug on the original, influencial CSI after the current series? I personally think so and things are getting embarassing now when it's been rolling on for twelve fucking seasons (and the cast is changing a lot in recent seasons, mirroring what happened in other long running TV shows, like ER and Stargate SG-1).

Cast changes are to be expected in any long running series. It reflects the real world where people come and go out of our lives and new people come to replace them.

ratings are still strong, and better than either Miami or NY. C.E. Evans is right, of course there will be new characters on a show that has gone so long, and I think CBS should give the new line up, next season to prove itself.

Also there are still a few S1 characters around, Nick, Greg, Sarah, Brass, and the two MEs.

It's still a Top 25 show with several original cast members. It's had an uptick in quality this season from the last two with the exception of Marg Helgenberger's exit. That was some truly awful writing.

The addition of Ted Danson has really improved the quality of the show. He's brought a nice quirkyness to the show that's been lacking the last several seasons. Elizabeth Shue seems like a good addition as well. At least so far. Fishburne was pretty good in hisearly days before the writers ruined his character so they have plenty of time to screw up hers.

I never warmed to Dr. Ray. Ted Danson and Elizabeth Shue look like they are going to be great together, though.

CSI has lost many millions of viewers and has been fully dislodged by NCIS, however the ratings are still pretty strong, even though they're probably as low as they've ever been in comparative terms. Lawrence Fishburne was alright, but he deserved better (that serial killer story arc went on too long) and had mighty big shoes to fill, but I never disliked Ted Danson (Guliver's Travels). Maybe I'm exagerating the decline of CSI and I just needed to take a break from it.

Law and Order has shown that a series can thrive with ongoing cast changes. Ultimately as long as people still want to watch the show it'll continue. My mom watched it religiously until Grissom left, and she just didn't warm to Laurence Fishbourne's character, so she stopped. But it's still getting strong ratings, and that's all that matters.

Thing about CSI is the characters are secondary. That's why Law & Order survived. It's not the same as a series built around a specific set of characters - NCIS is the #1 show in the land but that will only continue until one of the main cast members leaves. Because in that show the stories are secondary to the characters.

Miami and New York are far more likely to be cancelled in the near future than CSI. If you see an NCIS/CSI crossover, then you'll know CSI is in trouble.

It's purely personal preference, but I've never really got on with the original CSI. Certainly prefer Miami and NY.

That being said, I agree that it's far more likely that Miami and/or New York will be cancelled before Vegas. My money would be on NY although it really wouldn't surprise me if they got rid of both.

I almost never missed an episode until Grissom left. Then I missed a few here and there, eventually I gave up trying to watch anymore because I've missed several key arcs. I plan to return to watching it with DVD's or Netflix if it goes on there.

As far as quality, what I saw of Lawrence Fishburne episodes seemed all right. He did a pretty good job it seemed. I'm most let down by the old familiars, Nick and Catherine. I don't know why, but their characters and the actors portrayals no longer interest me.

It's very likely one of the CSIs will get canceled this years. It'll probably be CSI: NY. There were rumors last year that it was going to be canceled and CBS only ordered 18 episodes for it this season instead of 22. I read that the writers aren't going to do a cliffhanger at all in case it ends this season. CSI Miami will probably go on at least another season. The original show probably has a couple of more years left. It'll probably be the last to go.

Syndication rights will also keep the three shows around longer than they should. It's probably the only reason NY even got it's current season.

CSI:NY was moved to Friday to help spruce up the night and it's still doing pretty well. It really didn't lose that many viewers on the switch.

However, they really screwed CSI: Miami over and gave it the Sunday death slot. Sometimes it doesn't even start till almost 11:00 pm and the statisticians wonder why people quit watching it. Duh.

Speaking of syndication rights I remember when CBS's ad campaign was saying that Miami was the most watched show in the world like Baywatch once was. That has since stopped and Las Vegas has since been getting the you should watch what everybody else is watching push..

I do think Ted Danson has giving the old horse a new life, I have'nt seen the Elisabeth Shue episode yet. New York has the misfortune of being in New York, with so many NYPD based shows the street CSI's seem even more unrealistic then Horatio killing someone every week. Every time I hear "CSI" my mind ask why aren't they calling them CSU.

I can't believe this franchise has produced more than 650 episodes. Even if the two spin-offs are cancelled this year it still has a good shot towards producing more episodes than the entirety of the Star Trek franchise on television.

Works for me, as long as I can keep writing for both! :)

None of the CSIs have ever been must-see viewing for me...but Vegas has, for whatever reason, always been my least favorite. I guess I'm kind of opposite of the 'true fans' of this franchise, because I like NY and Miami (in that order) better than Vegas.

And I actually like Lawrence Fishburne more than Peterson.

I have not seen a Ted Danson episode yet...but I bet I'd like him in this show - I've always liked him in general.

I'm MUCH more a fan of NCIS and NCIS:LA, both of which are must-see viewing for me (have my DVR set to auto-record them even).

I'm producing CSI: Bajor. Should I throw your name into the hat for lead writer? :)
