Wondering if the idea has been discussed, perhaps it could even be divided into types of music: rap/hip-hop/urban, Rock/alt, Country, whatever....

However, we already have a forum that covers this: General TV & Media. I doubt there'd be enough music discussion here to support its own forum.

I would be really up for a music forum, it seems these days all I want to talk about is music, and I mean real discussion of music.
Unfortunately, I foresee anything like that being just me on my own and a few others. Unlike with TV shows and games, there isn't enough of an audience here who are interested in new music, at least, not from what I've seen in my repeated attempts at trying.
I do frequent a dedicated music forum, where even the off-topic forum is partly taken over with music topics, the actual music forums (divided into pop, indie, rock, dance, and RnB) are mainly full of a different topic for each artist/song full of release information, and people's reactions on the songs as they premiere. It's nice enough for a dedicated board, but I can't see it working as part of a multi-purpose board like this.

I've been a big supporter of a music forum when it had been discussed and debated before, and if such a thing were to come into being, I can imagine the potential - not just discussing new releases and new artists, but also classic albums as and when people feel they want to talk about them, other genres including soundtracks and classical music, favourite performances, recordings and music videos, concert news, debate, and even a sticky thread showcasing the musical talents of individual members of the TrekBBS.
Demand for music discussion is low, if measured by the number of specifically music-based threads out there right now. Perhaps, just like the Gaming forum, discussion of music matters might be encouraged and allowed to thrive if given a place in which to expand, such as a separate forum.
Music being the highly subjective art form that it is, though, I can see it become a heated place of discussion.
I've seen other music discussion boards that have permanent discussion threads for specific artists, just like the ones you describe. It wouldn't work like that on a board like the TrekBBS, but I can see it develop just like a music-themed version of Gaming.

Oh definitely. There's a wide range of stuff that could be discussed but isn't currently being done so now. Whenever I see a music dedicated thread on the front page of TV & M, I always race into there, because it's such a rarity. And then it always drops off the front page rather fast, in place of the many TV shows I personally have no interest in.
And I think there are enough music lovers on the forum to have a decent amount of reviews and back-and-forth stuff to go there. If it was just for new music, it would probably fail, but there is a lot more.
Mine has even has subforums for the biggest artists, for the likes of Lady Gaga, Britney, Rihanna, Katy Perry, Adele, and Madonna (the majority of the clientele are female pop lovers). At one time we used to have 50+ but most of them folded because there wasn't enough discussion to keep them going when the artist in question was on a break. Those came about because their threads were taking over the genre forums. But then that's a dedicated forum again.
I'm a moderator of the Pop Forum over there, and three-quarters of the threads I have to deal with are long condensed threads for one artist. Makes it easy to deal with for mod purposes, but there isn't much discussion going on in many of them, as again, it's a lot of fans orgasming over the new single from their act and the artist forums are now a drain rather than a help, they take away the best conversation from the forum, as most of the good posters post their thoughts on the biggest artist's new singles, but not for a lot of what's left in my forum. And you have loads of confused newbies starting a generic 'lady gaga/britney spears covers' topic. I've lost count of the times I've said 'go to the artist forum' and deleted the poor newbie's topic. The Indie forum is a lot more refined, to be honest, the average age of the posters there tends to be higher. Actually, some of the obscure music there would be more suited to a lot of people here, maybe those who don't like all the ubiquitous club tracks around now, LMFAO, Pitbull et al.

If we had a music forum, I could see half of it being currently like Gaming/TV & M for specific songs/artists, and half of it being all the other stuff you described up top. Agreed there is a lot of potential.

Funny. The older I get, the less I like. When I was a teenager, I liked a very broad selection of music. These days, I couldn't be pickier, and won't give anything the benefit of the doubt. I don't even listen to the radio anymore, unless it's the classic rock stations. I don't know anything past 2000. I get so confused when my sixteen year old sister talks music. I still want to know who this Justin Bieber is...*scratches head*

Tons, in fact. It makes up 90% of what I have in my collection. And a decent proportion of that is music that would get nowhere near the charts. You do have to look a bit deeper if you are fed up of what is on the radio.
The production values for 21st century music compared to 20th century make such a difference for me. I like several songs from before 2000, but the majority of songs I love are from after it. Artists are constantly finding new ways to express themselves, and a lot of it is lovely.
The Bieber hasn't been a music hit critically, nor has he been THAT huge commercially. It's the hype people give him outside of a musical sense that make him seem bigger than he really is.
