For those who complain about lens flare.

Most of the fanbase is on board. The complainers are a tiny fraction of Star Trek fans, but they make so much noise and talk so incessantly to one another that they think they're a movement.

WE WILL CRUSH YOU!!!!!

;)

Depends - how many Galaxy class fans you got on your side?

Oh how people forget that it was fan, critic and general audience outcry that got Lucas to cave on further adding his character Jar Jar Binks in the 2 remaining prequels. Yes Jar Jar is in Ep II but he's been demoted from main character to background character and has only 2 speaking lines. In Ep III he's seen briefly in the beginning and at the end with no speaking lines.

If enough people make a ruckus about JJ's lens flares in the Trek movies, I'm sure he'll reduce them as the series goes on. I do recall the cast signed up to do 5 movies. Hopefully it doesnt take that long for him to get the message.

Hey, despite his lack of lines in the subsequent movies, Senator Jar Jar played a key role in bringing down the Old Republic. IMO, that more than made up for his annoyance factor. ;)

And oh, how most of us just don't give a fuck and never gave it a thought.

If enough people make a ruckus about JJ's lens flares in the Trek movies...

"Enough people" won't, so chill.

Fans love to convince themselves that TPTB are following their whining and ranting as if it were some compass of either quality or popularity or both. The bottom line is, uh, the bottom line: most people who succeed at something by trusting their own taste and judgment continue to trust their taste and judgment.

I using parallelism to other movies and their aesthetics that audiences had gripes about. Do you not realize the improbability of Paramount actually taking in to account anything the fans say? I never said the lens flares were a deal breaker or I hate any part of the film. I only ever said they were overused and slammed in there at obnoxious times. Like in the bar, when Uhura walks in, and when Kirk flirts and gets into a fight. Also when Kirk and Spock are having their confrontation, where Kirk emotionally compromises Spock, there are lens flares flickering back in forth during this highly dramatic scene.

I've said it before, I like JJ's reimagining of the Trek mythos. I own the movie on blu-ray, and have 2 copies of the dvd. The real bottom line is when the movie comes out next year JJ will get my $22 from me going to see it twice. That's all that really matters.

So you chill dude.

And the "bottom line" is that Trek Prime lasted 40 years and by some estimates made Paramount more than $1 billion. It became the major tent-pole supporting Paramount Studios.

I don't expect JJ Trek ultimately to have anywhere near the longevity. It's entertaining enough, and does just enough right to be worth casual interest, but it ultimately is shallow both creatively and in terms of the intensity of following it inspires.

Ah, well. There are always people who can only be happy when they are UNhappy about something.

And there are always people who get their jollies by bashing fans...even people who should know better.

What the hell does that even mean?

Are you saying you're a fan but 7thsealord isn't?

No, I'm saying there exists a group of people who like to run down fans of certain shows and certain types of fan of other shows.

It's happened to classic BSG fans, old-school Marvel comics (pre-Jemas era) fans, Firefly fans and now Trek Prime fans.

The Prime universe lasted 40 years, but TOS lasted 3, there was a moderately successful series of movies, and then TNG - ENT lasted 18. It wasn't some epic unbroken streak of pure win, nor the work of one team.

Yes, and it's happened more than a little to people who like the 2009 Abrams Star Trek movie (no small portion of it coming from those same poor, beleaguered Trek Prime fans whom you mentioned last.) That sort of thing cuts both ways, as you can no doubt imagine, and I'm saying that I would prefer not to see any of it happening in this forum. Quite simply, it's unnecessary, and I think it's counterproductive.

Criticism of shows and movies is fine—that's part of what we do here and on other internet boards—but let's avoid taking swipes at any particular fan groups, especially when said groups may be represented by registered members of this BBS. Most of us here are fans of several different incarnations of Trek—not just TOS, not just TNG, not just JJ-verse Trek—and fans of other franchises besides. Whatever there is to talk about can be discussed quite thoroughly with absolutely no need for getting personal over any of it.

Not saying it was, but everything TOS-ENT has more in common with each other than any or all of it does with JJTrek, both in terms of production AND content.
