"John Carter of Mars" Moving Ahead!

Yeah, this does look great. Can you guys tell from the trailer how close this is going to be to the original book? They have the first three books avaiable for the Nook for only 3.99 as part of Barnes & Noble's Library of Essential Reading.

FROM what I have seen of the trailers it looks like they a keeping true to the story.

there is also a barsoom omnibus which is $3.99 and it has the first five books in it.

aviable on the nook.

I think he meant quality wise, and there are alot of great movies that didn't get make a ton of money.

^^ Indeed. More often, the reverse is true. While Avatar looked like something out of Analog, the story was a horrible disappointment. John Carter has the advantage of excellent source material, but that's no guarantee of quality either-- what I've seen so far makes me cautiously optimistic.

If they're e-books, you can get them for free from Project Gutenberg.

Just FYI, all of ERB's works are in the public domain. They can be had for free download as EPUB files from Project Gutenberg.

Specificially, A Princess Of Mars can be had here.

No, only the first five books are public domain in the United States; the rest are still under copyright. In the UK, all of the books are under copyright until 2020 (life plus seventy). In Australia, all but the last book are in the public domain.

I forget if anybody has mentioned this, but there's a new anthology out for the 100th anniversary of A Princess of Mars featuring some original Barsoom short stories by contemporary writers. It's called Under The Moons of Mars (the original title of POM). I've only read the first couple of stories, but it's pretty good so far.

Really?! That is cool news.

I saw it in Barnes & Noble on Saturday, but I'd already ordered it online so I didn't pick it up then. (I should have it on Wednesday.) It looks like a pretty snazzy book. It's edited by John Joseph Adams, who seems to have picked up the anthologist's baton from the late Martin H. Greenberg. (I have several of Adams' anthologies in my library.)

^^ I haven't had a chance to read more than the first three stories yet. The first two are very good and easily fit into Barsoom continuity. The third is good, but a bit odd, and I'd classify it as an alternate take on the subject matter; I'm actually surprised it's in the book, though, but I won't say why-- spoilers! :D

yep there is found it fantastic I put it in my wish list area. how many pages is it?
Offhand, I don't know. About average, I guess.
