Question about tuvok

He quit Starfleet while he was still an ensign and didn't return until fifty or so years later, IIRC.
Yeah, that about sums it up. He only spent a few years in Starfleet, during which he had no real interest in his job and likely made no advencement attempts. He left for fifty years, and when he returned began actually putting serious effort into his career.
That and he spent a lot of time teaching at the Academy.
Teaching "Archery".
I'm not sure if many people make it to Admiral by teaching Archery.
So, if ll your stupdents are superb, passing with flowing colours and awarding you glowing recomendations in your critical evaluations... You get a promotion?
However.

You know I think Tuvok would make an excellent captain. One quality he had was he was always willing to listen to others input and to adjust his own perspective.
I see no evidence that Tuvok wasn't good at his job. I don't think he would have been an instructor at Starfleet Academy if that was case.
I do think, though, that rank isn't important for Academy instructors and it isn't the career path to go for those seeking promotions to begin with. Some Academy instructors may finish their entire careers without ever advancing beyond the rank of lieutenant, IMO.

1. Resolutions was the episode where they marooned Janeway and Chakotay. Captain Tuvok said "Have a nice life, it's my ship now, best of luck, screw you, I'm going home."
For the next 2 months, at every crisis point, this dick head little Ensign was yapping, yelping and yelling about how they should turn back, or save Janeway or contact the Vidians even though it would most likely see the entire crew gutted and stored in jars.
Kim had several boisterous, what can only be called "tantrums" trying to force Captain Tuvok to adhere to his point of view, which didn't work. Kes on the other hand, applied a few gentle words and guided him towards a logical conclusion.
Tuvok during the final conflict, was in his pyjamas at the time, did I mention?
It's almost like Kes'n'Kim were auditioning to be his sex opponent.
2. In the pilot, Tuvok was a spy that went undercover with the Maquis. This bloke is a Tactical Officer on a Starship, not Starfleet Intelligence. In fact the entire mission was of Janeways design, so she sifted through her crew to see who she could believably introduce into the Maquis with some chance of success... Either Tuvok got the Job because he was the head Security Officer, he had a background in Intelligence and undercover missions, or he taught theatre at the academy.
I mean seriously. If you're teaching "Archery Science" to technocrats in the 24th century, by definition you are the artsy fartsy hippy teacher on campus wearing socks with sandals, which goes hand in hand with subjects like ornithology or philately or folke dancing.
Do we really know who this Tuvok person really is?

And his daughters, Gonerla, Reagan and Cordelia would all be seven years younger than their immediately next oldest sibling.
Vulcans end up being a lot of people in that some have quite a few careers in their long lifetimes and seem to retain it all.
As to his assignment with the Maquis perhaps there had been hack or a leak and Starfleet Intelligence was compromised so needed a completely fresh person with zero connections for the job. Or maybe the Maquis had gotten a lot more canny lately and spotted a few S.I. agents in their ranks, so sending someone in from a fresh background seemed like a good idea.
Actually, I wonder if "teaching Archery at the Academy" might be a euphemism or a codeword of some kind. During the Cold War, being a Soviet Embassy's 'Cultural Attache' was (despite sounding wussy) usually shorthand for "the guy who ran all the spies".
So, maybe there is a similar thing going on here with Star Fleet Academy, That others would tend to underestimate the Archery-cadets, and not pay them much mind, seems very plausible. They probably don't have folk-dancing or stamp-collecting on the Academy cirriculum anyhow. Great cover for a spy school or, at least, some basic training in that field.
Star Fleet Ninjas? Dunno where that thought came from, but it sounds entertaining.

Whyelse would 8472 use Boothby as a mouthpiece?
Meanwhile Picard from first principles claims that Boothby taps greatness and grooms potential as he watches over each new generation of cadets.
But that's not all a gardner does, they don't just nurture. They prune, weed and clear away the brambles, hells some times they plant a stick of dynamite into a rouge tree stump and watch it go boom.
(Did Boothby kill that kid in The First Duty to sort out Red Squad?)

Although remember when Busey's kid lost a hand to the Kurgen in Star Ship Troopers 1?
