Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

Nice review. When I read the book in manuscript, I did the same thing you did -- as per Quantum Leap, Stargate, and other shows with "body-switching," I visualized Kirk when it was Kirk inside Col. Christopher (unless the scene was from another character's POV), and vice-versa. My mental casting choice for Shaun Christopher was Ben Browder.

Ooh, Ben Browder, good choice! I went with the more boring option of (a slightly older) Roger Perry.

Enjoyed it, for the most part! Greg Cox can definitely spin a good yarn. Here's my review.

To be honest, I often found myself visualizing Kirk even when he was in Shaun's body . . . .

no spoiler tag for that switching?
Still awiting the USPS to deliver it.....

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

Picked up the eBook. Hoping to start it this weekend, then will put up a review.

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

Loved it....especially some of the names for the characters. I went back and watched Tomorrow is Yesterday this morning and saw a reference to a couple of these names.

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

Not to get spoilery, but I figured out the minor revelation about the stowaway (but not the major one).

Same here. And to be honest it was the major revelation that made this book "above average" for me instead of "outstanding." I won't go onto my reasons here for spoilers sake, though.

Still, the characterizations (for both the new ones and the "regulars") were very good. I would have read a novel about the Lewis and Clark crew, even without the Trek characters, I enjoyed their story so much.

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

I just started.
According to the Chronology, the Saturn mission was launched earlier than 2020. Why was that done?

True, the Chronology (which was published way back in 1996) states that the mission was in 2009, but, well, that ship has sailed . . . .

The actual TV episode, "Tomorrow is Yesterday," never specifies the date, which gave me some wiggle room to go for 2020 instead.

So I have eight good years before this book is out-of-date! :)

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

I recently picked-up the ePub of Rings of Time. It's quite well made. I'll be starting sometime next week.

What, you don't think we'll launch a human to Saturn in 2020? :)

There are a few i'd like to launch there now but that's another thread.

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

Not at all Greg for a lot of Trek tech does not exist on this Earth.

That was another reason for bumping the Saturn mission to 2020. It gave me a chance to push the technology slightly beyond modern-day NASA tech.

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

Great review I can't wait to read this book.

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

Greg, with impulse engines Trek are way advanced in propulsion, but seem to have the same tech in life support and sensors, EVA equipment.
just got to the both swaps, so far so good.

Re: TOS: The Rings of Time Review Thread

You've climbed to #3 in the ranking, Greg :).
