New Una McCormack novel for October 2012?

Oh, Christopher... How I wish I could get a peek inside your mind at all you know about the future of the novel line.

The new trilogy is definitely a TNG trilogy, part of S&S's celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the series.

Sweet. I've been wondering if Pocket was doing anything for the 25th anniversary of TNG. Do you have any idea when you'll be able to say more about it?

No later than February 15th, at which point the titles and brief descriptions will be on shelves everywhere in Issue #39 (US) of Star Trek Magazine. Maybe before then...

Not that I am complaining but why all of a sudden are we getting 5 books in 5 months? We go from a little ( at least of what I enjoy reading) to a whole bunch. Seems a little unbalanced.

John Ordover often explained it thusly: with no steady stream of a particular series on TV, the marketing people prefer like novels to be released in clumps. Then the shops are more likely to set their shelves to show off five, related, newish books - and that can build visual impact, interest, and the titles help the sales of each other.

Imagine if they did twelve different series installments across twelve different months. It would be "balanced", but too predictable, and it's probably harder to revitalize intense reader/buyer interest in one book every twelve months.

I wish there was a comfortable way to just subscribe to the Trek novel feed instead of having to do the labor of preordering them individually :p.

My bookshop created an "All Star Trek" perpetual order for me - and I just have to let them know when a reprint is coming that I won't be needing.

if I'm not mistaken, NJO is not just a series but an "era", yes? Star Wars divides its stories into chronological periods, and one corresponds to the NJO precisely?

no, not really. the New Jedi Order series was a distinct series of 19(?) books telling the story of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the Galaxy Far Far Away. this was followed by the Dark Nest Trilogy and the Legacy series.

the NJO era is the time-period from NJO's first book forward. or at least, that's how I understand it, although i quit buying post-ROTJ novels when the final NJO book came out and only bought the Republic Commando series, which are set in the Clone Wars.

You're correct, the NJO was a 19 book series. The NJO era was the NJO and Dark Nest. I can't remember, but I don't think the stories were divided into eras back then.

Thanks, both of you, for the info. I'm not very well versed in how things are run for Star Wars...

Hmmm, interesting way of doing things. I suppose the whole Star Wars universe is basically a saga, isn't it? It's arguably one story while Trek is a cluster of stories? I much prefer the Trek way (hence one reason why I'm a Trek fan and only a casual browser in Wars), but their system looks interesting and probably works quite well given the nature of that franchise. :)

Oh, Christopher... How I wish I could get a peek inside your mind at all you know about the future of the novel line.

I don't actually know that much. There are only a couple of these upcoming projects that I'm in the loop on to any extent because their authors have sought me out for consultation.

So he knows that something science-y will be happening, but he doesn't know why. ;)

He's the helpful technician who's left out of the real plan. It's people like Mack and George and Beyer who are planning on blowing things up, he's just helping prepare their tools.

"Assist me with this antimatter bomb schematic, please"

"Why, what's it for?"

"....science....:shifty:"

"Okay".

:p

No, that's not how it works. I can't know what to suggest until I know what it's for in the story. Plus a lot of the consultation is as much for continuity as science -- for instance, I got to read the manuscript for The Rings of Time months ago so I could make sure Forgotten History would be consistent with it. What I mean is that I have knowledge of the specific books I've been consulted on, but that's only a few of the books, and where the other books are concerned, I'm as much in the dark as any other fan.

You can tell I don't have the mind of a scientist, can't you?

Sorry, I did understand what you meant by your original comment, I just couldn't resist making rather stupid jokes...

"Kindly remove your head from the gift-horse's mouth." ;)

I find it helps to visualize it as a tree: the Skywalker family/bloodline is the "trunk," with a few interesting "branches" (Republic Commando, Rogue Squadron, etc) spiralling off. Occasionally these branches develop their own sub-branches, but they usually just get reabsorbed, forgotten, or deliberately pruned by (well-intentioned?) topiary sculptors/canon-police.

Trek, OTOH, is more like a network of vines (TNG, DS9, TOS, VGR, TTN, etc). Each strand is equally important/valid, and they remain largely self-contained, but can intertwine with each other (Destiny) before twisting away again. It's more free-form, and there's no real hard-and-fast right/wrong way to enjoy it.

:bolian:This awesome news Una McCormack writing another novel this certainly I look forward to getting this new novel later this year.

I like your analogy. Thanks. :)

Dude, you are amusing. I'm oddly reminded of Portal, somehow....
