Five Guys Burgers ... People like them?

They opened a Five Guys here some time back, so Hubby and I figured we'd try it. Ugh! By flavor alone (not discussing the decor), this was NOT a great, or even good, burger.

It was thin, flat, dry, crumbly, as were all the others that were being assembly-lined together.

Why do people think they're "the best"? Is this an East Coast thing?

Carl's Jr is better than Five Guys, though I prefer a local place (Dog House Grill), Flemings, or Ruth's Chris. They have happy hour burgers for $6 that are juicy and full of flavor.

So, fans of FG, tell me why you think it's so the best. Am I missing something?

I hated Five Guys when I went to Nashville and tried them. And the supposedly awesome fries? Burnt, with salt and oil to cover the burnt taste. Damn...if I want a good fast-food burger and fries, I'm going to Backyard Burger.

That sounds nothing like the Five Guys here. I hadn't had it before coming to CA and they're my favorite fast food burger here easily. Like the fries too, as they taste like potatoes.

The burgers are OK, but the few times I've gone there, the burgers were cold because the lettuce they put on it was ice cold. The fries, however, were so awesome that I'm fairly sure they sprinkle some form of crack on them.

But, I rarely eat burgers and burgers in general don't impress me much, so take it as you will.

Five Guys Burgers ... there's not going to be a cup or anything in this story, right?

The burgers are exactly the same Wendy's and more expensive. The fries are excellent though. If you had a bad fry experience I suggest giving them another shot.

I'm not a big fan of Five Guys either, but I find as time goes on that I am liking burgers less and less in general. I enjoy them from In N Out and Red Robin and that's about it.

I love the fries! The burgers aren't bad, but not my favorite. Though the first couple of times I had In N Out, I neither liked the fries or the burgers. Now I love them both.

In-N-Out Burger is the best. Second best is Fatburger. Best of the global burger franchises is Burger King. McDonalds still has the best fries, though.

Five Guys? Never heard of them.

I've only had In-n-Out since coming out here and it's okay, maybe even good, but not amazing or anything. My favorite fast food burgers are Five Guys and Portillo's. And I love burgers, so I've had plenty!

I have yet to eat a fast food sandwich item that's better than Smashburger.

Next best thing, though, is Runza burgers.

the 5 guys i've eaten at have been some of the better burgers i've had, that said there's a restaraunt 3 blocks from my place that is simply incredible, a local joint

I've heard a lot of good things about 5 guys, so this is the first time I've heard bad things. I wouldn't mind trying them out but I'm not sure if they are where I am.

As for In-N-Out, I do like that place, but their fries are awful. Stil prefer McDonald's fries, or if I just wanted the overall experience, nothing beats Red Robin. Best Burger place in town in my opinion.

I'm in the Bay Area and we have one here, so they might not be in your specific city but they're around! I'm kind of surprised by all the positive talk of Red Robin though. I think their burgers are okay but not any better or worse than all the other sit-down chains out there.

I have had a few Five Guys burgers in Baltimore, and I thought they were great, for a fast food burger.

I think Five Guys has the best burgers, but that's conditional as it's comparing them to other fast-food restaurants. When you've got a Five Guys, Wendys, McDonalds and a Burger King all within a block of you it's easy to compare and see that Five Guys has the best fast-food burger. I mean it actually tastes like food and meat.

Now, a while back we used to have a sit-down style restaurant that specialized in burgers (Fuddruckers) and they were awesome. The only local franchise we had here closed down a few years ago so: :(. And the other sit-down style restaurants around here mostly have okay burgers.

The one problem I have with Five Guys is they won't cook burgers to order. I know my food safety guidelines and I know I can get away with eating a medium-cooked burger without dying or getting sick but Five Guys insists on only cooking the burgers to well-done. (Fuddruckers would cook-to-order, not going below medium.)

I also think Five Guys' fries are satisfyingly awesomely good. I like me salty fries and the cooking them in peanut oil is just that much greater. They also give you a ton of fries with an order. When my buddy and I eat there we just trade off on who buys the fries because even with the small you get a cup of them and then another cup of them tossed onto the top of your order. You know their fries have to be good when the bag gets greasy from them and your car well smell like them for two days afterwards.

So, for me, Five Guys is the best fast-food burger in town. Barring a In N Out ever being built near me (which I hear has really good burgers) I'm sticking with that idea.

Naturally, if I want a really good burger I'll just cook one myself. ;)

Smashburger

There's also a Smashburger around the corner from here, or there was it likely didn't last long given the Five Guys and restaurants generally don't last long in this specific area. And it was... Meh. But I'm the one turned off on the name alone as something of a cook I know better than to "smash" a burger when cooking it. Want to know why? Get a sponge, make it soaking wet, and then "smash" it by pressing your hand down on it really hard with your hand (or a spatula for authenticity, I guess.) See what happens? Imagine all of that moisture (read: water, fat (FLAVOR) flowing out of your food.

I can't believe I read this whole post. It makes me want to eat nothing but salad for a month.
