Casino Gambling Etiquette

Have patience to people who might not know the game as well as you do. I remember when I first started gambling, and I played blackjack, I got criticized for hitting when I should have stayed and yes sometimes it came from the dealer. Not a good way to make someone feel welcome. The worst is when it comes from the people around you. Way to go telling everyone you are counting cards.

Of course I say that with the conceit that you should play things correctly. ;)

Blackjack is the only game I'll play in a casino because, really, it's probably one of the only game where the odds are a bit more in your favor.

Anyway, I went with a friend once and he managed to pretty much piss of the entire table by splitting tens. Which is about as a huge of a no-no as you can get. If you have two tens you have 20 and have effectively won. If you split on them you're taking away either potential winning cards from your fellow players or bust cards for the dealer. But he split on tens. Twice. In a row. On the same hand. He got two tens, split them and they each got another 10 and he split again having four hands going at once. He ended up winning on all of them but in the long run had taken away a bust card from the dealer who had to draw on a 13, ended up getting 17 causing two players to lose. Had my friend played correctly the dealer would've drawn a 10-card, busted, and the whole table would have won.

Blackjack is fun (and easy) to play, and as I said it's probably one of the few games that operate in your favor and doesn't leave too much up to the random chance rolling dice or spinning wheels do, but there is still some strategy and a lot of etiquette to be aware of. If you do decide to play it visit the casino's gift shop and they will likely have a small credit-card sized "cheat card" giving you suggestions on when to hit/stand on your hand vs. what the dealer has. It should be okay for you to have this handy as you play at a table. But it's really a game where you have to remember your playing against the dealer and not the other players and to not do things that'll hurt them/piss them off.

Being criticized for hitting when you should stay doesn't necessarily mean that they are counting cards; they could be simply playing odds and using strategy. Nothing wrong with that, and its not technically "card counting".

Nobody gets upset in poker if I know that with 2 cards in my hand and 4 on the table, There are 46 cards remaining that I have no information about, and if I need a certain card to win (say, a Jack) I have a 4/46 = 9% chance of drawing my outs (regardless of what is in other people's hand). Obviously, a skilled poker player infers more information based on betting patterns, other potential hands that draw higher than yours, and whether or not your draw is the nuts. This says nothing about pot odds, which disregard the hand you hold.

Counting cards, by the way, isn't illegal. It may not be seen favorably by the casino but you can do it.

I'm sure there's a logical reason why you needed to point out that the people who do that are "Asian."

While I don't gamble for fun, I trade commodity markets for a living, so I think I should be fine as far as that goes.
Commodity market trading vs casinos.
There's a difference?
Oh right! One is with other people's money and the other is with your own.

You say it as a joke but it's actually an important difference. It's amazing the difference when it's your money in your leisure time vs your job with all the legal/ethical frameworks that entails. When it's your money in your leisure time, you need to provide the regulatory framework (for want of a better phrase) for yourself that's semi-automatically provided in a working environment.
