Been going through Season 1...

I do like hearing the ACTUAL reasons people leave the series though as opposed to all the PR guff we get through official channels

"Oh we'd run out of ideas for the character"

Translation: We don't wanna write for that snarky, uncooperative diva any more

"We were heading in different directions in our thought process for the character"

Translation: The writers wanted to write for a character, the actor wanted to spend most of their time partying and off their face on drugs/alcohol

(Not that I'm implying anything with these broad statements :p )

I'm personally just amazed she jumped that early.
Yes, she wasn't getting the greatest amount of screen-time but her role required her to be on the bridge and could be quite crucial to episodes even that didn't centre around her character.

If I was here I'd have given it until the end of series 2 before I made that kind of serious decision.
Halfway through the first series isn't long enough to get a great feel for how the show and the character is going to work.

And perhaps she did regret that decision based on how many times she kept coming back...

She was sort of an early victim to the casting of Patrick Stewart. The original premise was a series led by the Riker (originally Ryker) character, with the captain (originally Julian Picard) in the wings and Macha Hernandez (inspired by Jeanette Goldstein's character in "Aliens), the feisty security chief who led away teams, and even bossed around the Riker charater when they were off-ship. Once the producers realised the calibre of Patrick Stewart, they ramped up Picard, moved Frakes to co-lead and Riker got to do most of the important lines on away missions.

If I was here I'd have given it until the end of series 2 before I made that kind of serious decision.

However, contracts get firmed up at the end of that first year. She did try giving them plenty of notice to improve her participation before the end of the season, and they ended up saying she could go almost immediately. Had she waited till Season Two to try to leave, her four-more-years option would have already kicked in, and to go at that point might have required a considerable buy-out of her contract. (Similarly, with Wil Wheaton, he asked for early release and they didn't penalise him, although they could have insisted he stay till the end of Season Five. It gave then a great, strong departure episode as well.)

She's on record as saying that. She really missed the camaraderie. Acting can be lonely work. Building a "family" over a seven-year period is a rarity for actors, who often have a gypsy life, moving on to new people and places every few days/weeks/months.

Honestly I thought season 1 was some of the weakest of the series so its probably the season I enjoyed the least as i've this year been watching TNG in order. Theres a lot of apparent flaws with the episodes which is expected of a new series but the fact remains its probably the weakest of the series.

I’m on record as saying Denise Crosby was terrible in the role of Yar, probably the worst of any Star Trek main character in any series. (It’s a race between her and Garret Wang, but I think she takes the prize.)

Yesterday’s Enterprise was brilliant. And although her role in All Good Things was small, it was nice to see her again.

On the other hand, Sela was a horrible idea. A poorly conceived character, with a poorly conceived backstory, played by a poor actress. If that was the best idea they could come up with for bringing her back, they shouldn’t have brought her back.

Nah, I thought the 7th was far worse. The execution in the 1st season might not have been the smoothest, but they still managed to produce a lot of really cool, dynamic episodes (Where No One, Big Goodbye, Datalore, 11001001, Heart of Glory, Conspiracy, Neutral Zone...)

The 7th just felt completely tired and derivative, like the writers just didn't care anymore. The only good ones in my book were Attached, Pegasus, Lower Decks, and All Good Things. The rest were either mashups of better episodes (ahem, Parallels), or just completely dull and unwatchable.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Season 1 was my least favourite because of the lack of chemistry between the cast.

Another negative was the TOS-style aliens. Haven might as well have just been somewhere down Miami way and Ligon II could have just been Harlem. The inhospitable alien worlds just being the same rocky formation, with a different colour sky? Meh.

And don't even get me started on Commander Riker being clean shaven ;)

Well Picard was definitely a grumpy stick in the mud, but the other cast I thought had some decent chemistry early on. And I actually liked the earlier, TOS-style planets (especially that planet in Last Outpost with the lightning storms and crystal formations). They actually felt kinda weird and alien, and it's a shame the show got away from that.

I'm certainly not saying it's a GREAT season, but I'd still much rather sit through it than the generic and uninspired 7th.

The other issue is that Crosby 9at that time) was getting feature film offers that sghe couldn't take because of her TNG contract; and while the producers didn't give her character many lines on screen, they still wouldn't give her time off or write her 100% out of an episode so she could take the film offers.

Yes, it sounds crazy, but in her mind, she probably thought TNG was holding her back from beccomuing a breakout feature film actress. (I too thought that while she had nice physical attributes, she was (and still is) a mediocre actress.

Well, seeing as how she aged, I think the partying, drugs and booze was there, alright. That sort of life style ages a person much faster than normal, hence why Lindsy Lohan and others like her wear so much makeup, because they end up looking close to 50 before they even hit 30. Which is a pity, since Denise had a nice, lean frame in the first season. I also saw her Playboy pictures, which I bought to send to a lesbian friend I know who had the hots for her, nice bod she had, at least.

Anyhow, I enjoyed a lot of the first season, same for the following three after that.
