favourite and least favourite doctor?.

It's hard to pick a favorite.
As for the actors, Troughton is my favorite, but I prefer the story telling style of the eras of Pertwee and T. Baker.
Least favorite? I "dislike" C. Baker the most, but he did have his moments, which I suppose puts him ahead of McGann.
I don't feel anything at all about McGann.

McGann really had too short of a time on-screen to be fairly compared to the rest. He was in one "story," and it was a regeneration story, where the Doctor's "not himself" for a while anyway.

I only have a small sample size but my favorite is Eccleston's doctor. My least favorite (And it pains me to opine this) is probably Smith's Doctor (And there are only three to chose from). I just don't think he's shown the range as the other two have and when it's a chaotic situation, you can barely understand him.

Favorite: 4th. Tom Baker. You always love your first Doctor. ;)
Least Favorite: 6th. Colin Baker. Just couldn't get attached to him, but in fairness, I also didn't get to see many episodes with him, either.

My favorite would be Tom Baker ..just as you and for the same reasons as well as I personally consider some of the episodes to be of the golden age being produced by Phillip Hinchcliff. Least favorite would also be Colin Baker.

Your viewpoint brings out a very important question that never seems to be addressed in these polls or discussions. Why is your favorite the favorite? Also why is the least favorite the least favorite?

I have come to believe that certain factors influence who is your favorite and least favorite...and when you think about it..may or may not have anything to do with the actor that plays the role. For instance..some say Tom was a horrible actor but...HE OWNED the role as the doctor..It was just him..no more said..In addition..Tom had the privilege of being the doctor that was under the production of Phillip. The writing and direction was top notch for a brief shining period.

It comes down to this..we all have our favorites and least favorites for whatever reasons they may be...and we are not wrong or right for believing so..The real issue that we should think about and address is this...

What if the actors could interchange eras and writers and directors and producers... Would Tom Baker still be a lead favorite for most fans if he came to play the actor in the period of Colin Baker. Conversely, would Colin become the favorite of many if he was to assume the role in what was Tom Bakers era?

I would love to hear others opinion on this matter.

I don't know if it's so much about time period, as the writing. Tom was a part of a really creative time for Doctor Who, the producers and the writers were top notch.

Colin worked with a guy who really wanted out as Producer. The scripts were tired.

I don't think Colin's idea of how to portray the Doctor was wrong, I think the execution of the stories were... weak.

Favorite Doctor is a tie, Tom Baker/Jon Pertwee, somedays I like one better than the other, but both were great.

Least favorite, Sylvester McCoy, his era was just horrid and campy. Horrible companions and cheesy, campy scripts.

This is the first (of what I'm sure will be several) of these for me, having just gotten into WHO in the last year, so I'm gonna figure out the order of all 11 for me. Of course, I have very little experience with several of them. From favorite to least:

4, Tom Baker
11, Matt Smith
2, Patrick Troughton
10, David Tennett
9, Chris Eccleston
5, Peter Davison
1, William Hartnell
7, Sylvester McCoy
8, Paul McGann
3, Jon Pertwee
6, Colin Baker

My favourite is a close race between the Fourth and Ninth. My least favourite will always be the Fifth.

^Always? I mean Six is my least favourite but I wouldn't discount the possibility that some right muppet will be hired as the 12th or 13th Doctor who I might end up disliking more :)

Favourite Doctor - Eight (Paul McGann)
Least favourite - Three (Jon Pertwee)

bonus questions...

Favourite Companion - Romana II
Least favourite companion - Adric

Favourite bad guy - The Rani
Least Favourite Bad guy - The Black Guardian

While we disagree in favorite Doctor (although I certainly enjoy the 8th Dr audio series) we can agree on least favorite companion and villian. I used to like Adric but now it takes a lot to warm upto him, and the Black Gaurdian seems such a waste in both his key to time and Turlough trilogy appearances.

Gld to see you like the Rani though. Brave choice.

The Rani was a brilliant character... i really do hope they bring her back...

she wasn't evil in the direct sense, more just morally ambiguous... she's what The Doctor could be if he didn't stick with his ethics so strongly i think...

and yeah, The Black Guardian could have been so much more... he could have been a really good badguy to run through the length of a much larger arc...

runner up favorite has to be the Valeyard though... really hope we get to see him soon... I want 10.5 (Meta-Crisis Doctor) to return as a bad guy... imagine Tennant coming back in a black suit with a goatee as an 'evil doctor' intent on getting his regenerations back... would be a lovely way to link to the old series, and a fantastic way to bring in a real threat for 11 :D

I have eagerly been watching the 11th Dr's adventures on DVd and think what he really needs right now is a good villian who can bring the ante up a bit more, like you said in the threat department. Series 5 was ok but a little lackluster for string villians, while Series 6 raised the bar for me. I like the Ponds but am not that keen on constant River Song appearances.

I too would like to see the Valeyard return and maybe a vindictive Doctor 10.5 clone would be a step in the right sirection. Did you like the Dream Lord? I did and thought at first he was the Valeyard! Crazy huh?

nah, i knew the Dream Lord wasn't going to be the Valeyard... i think the writers were trying to convince people he was at the beginning of the episode, but he just didn't fit right...

bringing in 10.5 as the Valeyard would be a master stroke... i can see Tennant now... black suit, goatee beard (Evil Spock style), black trenchcoat and a red sonic screwdriver, facing off against Matt Smith...

god, i'd love to see that episode lol

M

It would be a clash of the titans for sure! I am just happy the Dream Lord got an episode to appear in and they kept him sort of ambiguous. It works and we know he is still there in the Doctor's mind as the end of the episode showed, after the Doctor threw that cosmic stuff out the Tardis door. I've been hard on Smith on this forum but he really is developing into a decent Doctor and I hope if the next series really is his last that they go out in full swing. I also got a thing for Pond.
