msn homepage redirect?

CaptainJack

Lieutenant Commander
Peeps,
I use Google Chrome for my web browser. And I have www.msn.com set as my home page. Normally everything works fine. But recently when I click on my home button it redirects me to the hotmail sign in page. Even if I type the www.msn.com right into the address bar at the top it redirects me. I tried using firefox and it doesnt do this.
Any ideas whats going on?

I'd guess you have a cookie left from logging in to Hotmail before, so MSN knows that you have an account and wants you to login to it. You could delete the cookie, login, complain to Microsoft that you don't like this or choose a different home page.

To verify if that's the case, try opening the page in an incognito window.

Private browsing mode in Firefox and incognito windows in Chrome allow you to browse sites without leaving tracks on your computer, and without letting sites to access identifying information (such as cookies) stored on your computer.

Firefox: Press Ctrl+Shift+P (warning: closes your non-private tabs)
Chrome: Press Ctrl+Shift+N

Though there are sites which legitimately use cookies to keep track of whether or not you're logged on, and deny access to certain pages to users who are not. So by turning off cookies, you can be blocking your own access to those sites.

(JavaScript poses a similar problem - some people turn off JavaScript when they're browsing, but that causes some sites to fail to work correctly. For instance, without JavaScript turned on, you can't post or comment on Facebook at all.)

Private mode doesn't disable cookies. It just keeps them from reaching the disk (and presumably keeps cookies on the disk from reaching the sites).
