JD

Fleet Admiral

Since someone did a what did you read in 2011 thread, I thought it might be a good idea to do a what do you plan to read thread. I have alot of stuff I want to read, but some of it is more important to me that other parts. So here is just the stuff I own that I have yet to read, but plan to in the next few months. Most of the series, I only own some of but I plan to read the whole series by the end of the year.
Dresden Files book 5-13

The Hollows book 2-10
Southern Vampire Mysteries: I own Dead to the World (book 4) and Dead in the Family (book 10) but now I'm not sure if I want to go all the way to DitF, so that might either be sold or donated to the library.
Star Trek: MU: Rise Like Lions, TOS: Entropy Effect, The Children of Kings, TOS: How Much for Just the Planet, SCE Collections, DTI: Watching the Clock, Lives of Dax, NF: Blind Man's Bluff, TNG: Indistinguishable from Magic, MyrU: Shattered Light, Van: Declassified, TOS: Mere Anarchy 4-6, Rihansuu series, anniversary anthologies

Other series/Standalone: W13: A Touch of Fever, Eureka Substitution Method, The Glades: Pilot script, , Gulliver's Travels, Don Quixote, Three Musketeers, A Tale of Two Cities, Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Consider Phlebas, Psych: A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Read, The Last Days of Krypton, Grimm's Fairy Tales, Level 26: Dark Origins, , Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Writings, The Time Machine and The Invisible Man, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Stories, Frankenstein, The 4400 post finale duology, Dracula, Dune, Sandstorm, Discworld books (not sure how many, but definitely some of them), Dune, Map of Bones, The Last Oracle, Pillars of the Earth, Spider-Man movie novelizations, X-Men movie novelizations, The Amber Spyglass, Rising Sun, The Bourne Identity, The Hunt For Red October, Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity and Her Sister's Fight to Bring Her Home, Kitchen Confidential, Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optomist, Heat Wave, Night Watch (Original Russion Title: Nochnoy Dozor), Eragon
Yeah, it's a pretty big list, but I hope to put a good size dent in it, if not complete it, by the end of the year.
Oops: Forgot about Casino Royale, and the first Ent: Romulan War book.

Rise Like Lions, which I've just started then Dale Brown's Strike Force, Shadow Command, Rogue Forces, Whiplash and Black Wolf.

Vanguard series through to Storming Heaven.

Classic GI Joe Vol. 14 and 15 trades.

DRG's books prolly. Mack's trilogy almost certainly. DTI 2.

Dale Brown's Executive Intent.

the new VGR novel.

the trade of the GI Joe Yearbooks.

What do you plan to read in 2012?

Books.

Maybe some pamphlets.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Damn, I was just thinking that when I saw the title.

I'll be reading the obvious Trek novels this year, the finale of Vanguard, the new Voyager novel and David Mack's trilogy.

I'm not sure with DRGIII's duology, Rough Beasts isn't that great, nor is it bad, but I've just not enjoyed it, unlike his other novels, it feels too dry and he's lost some of the omph from is writing which made Serpents among the Ruins and Olympus Descending so bloody brilliant.

As for non Trek novels, I'll probably be reading: Rankin's new novel, Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy(which I must order from the library), The Lord of the Rings trilogy (which is a reread) and a book by the name of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote which the missus has been trying to get me to read for months, I don't really plan that far ahead when it comes to what I'll read over the course of a whole year.

Just thought I'd remind people that my first original novel Only Superhuman will be out in the fall of 2012....

I plan to get caught up with the current Trek chronology from Titan: Sword of Damocles on and read the new novels as they come out. Other than that, I'll probably take a break from Trek for a while. I'd like to start the Star Wars novels by re-reading Zahn's Thrawn trilogy and then read through his other SW novels. I'll probably catch up on some R.A. Salvatore by reading his Neverwinter series and then a little of Harry Turtledove's alternate history.

There are so many directions I could go after I get caught up with the current Trek novels that it boggles the mind. I guess we'll see where I go this time next year when we're looking back at 2012!

And it's really good (says the editor).

Meanwhile, if we're plugging our upcoming books: Besides my new Trek book (due out this month!), I also have Riese: Kingdom Falling, a prequel to the Syfy webseries, coming out in June.

And, just to stay on-topic, I'm working my way through James Rollins' Sigma Force novels.

Just a heads-up about SNW10... I got it used earlier this year, and was somewhat disappointed. The Grand Prize winner, "The Smell of Dead Roses," is indeed very good. And there are some other really nice stories. (The second prize winner, "Echoes," not included, in my opinion.) Overall, however, I found it less enjoyable than SNW9, the only other one I've been able to get my hands on. It felt like there were more clunkers in this volume. But YMMV. Hope you like it better than I did! :)

I have actually read the first four stories already (I kind of have the book as a back-up in case I'm not in the mood for longer stories) and I haven't been too impressed so far. "The Smell of Dead Roses" was the strongest of the four, but in the end I wouldn't say that it's better than average either.

That's probably a good strategy to reading them (using them as a back-up when you want something short). For what it's worth, I thought the DS9 stories were nice enough. (Though I don't like something that one of the stories does to the character of
Vic Fontaine- guts the character a bit
). I thought that one of the Speculations stories, "Time Line" was actually more enjoyable than "Echoes," but that may have just been me. The last story, "Reborn," was, ah, very unpalatable to me. I would not save it for last, for fear of it leaving a bad taste in your mouth about the whole anthology.

This year, I plan to read:

DTI: Forgotten History (Watching The Clock seemed a solid enough beginning to a new novel series and piqued my curiosity enough to want to read more)
Typhon Pact: Plagues of Night
Typhon Pact: Raise the Dawn
Titan: Fallen Gods
Voyager: The Eternal Tide

Personally I'm more of a 24th century prime timeline person, but that's just my personal preference.

:guffaw:

For Star Trek, I'm planning on pretty much the entire 2012 schedule. Once again, they all sound interesting. I'd also like to squeeze in the Romulan War novels if I get the chance.

On the Star Wars front, I'm hoping to get in the first 9 books set during the Clone Wars timeline. (But not The Clone Wars TV tie-in books, since I don't feel the TV show lines up.) I'm also planning on reading Darth Plageuis, Fate of the Jedi: Apocalypse, and X-Wing: Wraith Squadron- Mercy Kill.

Not really sure beyond that. Probably more time travel themed books, as I got some recommendations in the "What are you reading?" thread I'd like to look into.

This is all assuming I read at my regular speed of 24 - 36 books a year. I'm going to really try and push myself to get in 52 books this year, so we'll see.

I'm currently reading Consent to Kill by Vince Flynn. After that I'll pronably advance with the Mitch Rapp-series and read the installament in the ST-LE-series "Catalyst of Sorrows".
