I would imagine you could just use a pseudonym instead of your real name when you sign.

edit: I feel like the hate messages I've been getting on the petition site are uncalled for. Does saying that I like the current direction of the Voyager books warrant wishing that I would die of a weight-related heart problem?

Honoustly people, all this for a person who was never real to begin with? Trekkies have been called a lot of things in the past, but when fans go overboard like this over a 'person' who was never real in the first place...

I mean, I can understand how she had a positive influence on a lot of people, but does her 'death' change that somehow, does it make the impact this character had any less? When Ghandi passed away, was his positive influence all for nothing because he was no longer alive?

Please, just stop this and accept the fact that the Janeway character is no longer a part of the future of Star Trek novels, and move on.

 

It doesn't though does it, I mean, once every few months isn't constant.

As for pointless discussions, there are a few around here that could be classified as pointless, given that this is a discussion board where things are discussed and it has an ever growing membership, things will be repeated, what do you suggest happen, the board gets shut down so JD won't get annoyed by one thread out of hundreds? As I've said before (and I know you feel you'll miss out which is a very laughable reason to subject yourself to something you're not a fan of) if you don't like what's being said/discussed, keep out and don't post, it's the whole, if you ignore it, it may go away mentality.

 

Unfortunately, that's kind of a bad example, because after Gandhi's death, India and Pakistan almost immediately fell into the kind of sectarian violence that Gandhi strove to prevent and are still fierce rivals half a century later. So his positive influence didn't really last long at all after his death.

The difference, of course, is that Gandhi actually existed in the first place, and lived in a place and time where far more was at stake than there is for the typical Star Trek fan with enough leisure time to post on the Internet. Not to mention that Trek novels are only read by a small fraction of the fanbase, so Janeway's "death" doesn't really have that widespread an influence on the fan community. Although I guess there is merit to the argument that if the novels were the only place new post-"Endgame" fiction was being produced, then people who are fans of Janeway specifically would have no other choice but to go there. Well, no other choice but the extensive fan fiction they probably read and/or write anyway.

I've never understood how adults can get so worker up over the fate of fictional characters and still consider themselves mentally stable.

I don't think that there is a fictional character ever created whose "death" could get me upset enough to engage in conspiracy theories...let alone start petitions to have them resurrected.

Seriously people get over it.

In every fandom, there are always those that feel more passionately about certain things than others do, IMO. I'm not saying it's right, but this is pretty par for the course.

 

If they can bring back Trip, I think anyone is available for return (at the franchise's and writers' discretion). Few deaths in Trek have been as definite as that of Trip. I remember everyone being angry when he was killed in TATV, but were there many complaints when he was "resurrected"?

 

Actually nothing about that episode was definitive since the whole thing was a holodeck program. That's why CBS allowed the writers to offer an alternative version of events. Its like assuming that the events depicted in a Hollywood war film are exactly what happened in reality.

 

I can't imagine why you'd think that. First off, as Gotham Central said, we didn't actually see Trip's death, we saw a piece of holographic historical fiction about his death, created centuries after the fact. Second, even within that holographic docudrama, we didn't actually see Trip die. We saw a badly injured Trip being slid into the medical scan chamber, and then we cut to a scene with people saying he was dead. So Trip "died" off-camera in more ways than one. We have no direct evidence that it happened at all. It's hard to get more ambiguous than that. (In fact, the producers probably made it ambiguous on purpose so they could reverse it if the show got a miraculous reprieve from cancellation.) Seriously, Trip's death is by far the most easily retconned main-character death in all of Star Trek.

Dude, we're Star Trek fans. There are complaints about everything. I've seen my share of posts over the past few years saying that Trip should've stayed dead. Maybe they weren't as vocal as the "Not. Dead." camp, but they were there.
