When Does Babylon 5 not get boring?? lol...

Interesting. Glad the books brought her back in some form.

This thread made me finally bite the bullet and purchase the movie collection. I figured it's a last Christmas gift but I did enjoy the movies when I was watching the whole series a few years ago so I can't wait till they come and I can see The Gathering and In the Beginning again.

The Movies collection does not contain The Lost Tales (came out 2/3 years ago, set around 9 years after the fifth season) or Legend of the Rangers.

I know, but I'm sure I can live with it. For one, I still haven't seen Legend of the Rangers and I didn't entirely like The Lost Tales. At least the Movie collection brings the series to a reasonable end, at least with A Call to Arms, which was one I really enjoyed watching.

I enjoyed the storylines of The Lost Tales, but the shoestring budget made it kinda sad to watch. I think JMSs decision to pull the plug on future TLTs was the right move, given that he couldn't convince Warner Brothers to provide a real budget.

I think the B5 universe is dark for the forseeable future, which is fine given that the main story has been told.

I'm a B5 fan, but JMS' often overly lengthy, expository dialogue does occasionally bring episodes to a tedious crawl.

Even later seasons have plenty of episodes that are slow going...I also attribute this to budget. If it was JMS' intention to really shake up TV SF, then he could have made it more more exciting than STNG...which is the show he was aiming for at the time.

Aimed for and hit, frankly. B5 is far superior in terms of depth and complexity than TNG (or VOY for that matter). Only DS9 approaches it's level, and then only in the later 3 seasons.
And that's because they got the idea for DS9 from B5 in the first place.

And.....here we go....

Thankfully, here on Trek BBS, B5 fans and DS9 fans have realized that whatever happened (or didn't) almost 20 years ago doesn't matter anymore.

Yup, my first love is B5, but, DS9 is right directly below it, so, if one or the other borrowed from it's competition, it only made both shows better for it, so, it's all good.

I'm a huge fan of both, so I can hardly argue with myself over it...OK, I *could*, but whoever wins that argument, I loose. :p

Well I rank B5 in my top 15 SF shows all time (it's at #14, STNG is #1) it definitely has it's moments. I'd enjoy seeing a big budget movie version but I doubt any B5 will ever be made again...unlike ST.

RAMA

That's a fair point, but it isn't because B5 is lesser than ST in quality, it's due to the "closed storyline" nature of B5 vs the "universe" nature of ST.

B5 was the story of a specific group of characters in a specific place and point in history. Take that away (as in Legend of the Rangers and to a degree Excalibur) and interest wanes.

With Trek, there has always been another ship, another crew another time and place to explore.

I tried watching B5 when it first started, but it kinda bored me and I couldn't really get into it (to be fair, I had the same complaint about DS9, which I feel didn't get good til midway through S2).

Anyway, I regularly choose a show to watch/rewatch every month or so (most recently did rewatches of all 8 seasons of 24 and all of Star Trek TOS), and I reckon after 17 years it's about time I gave B5 another go.

So basically my question is, assuming I make it past S1, where amongst the 5 seasons do the films fit in?

That'll do, cheers. :techman:
Ah-ah! Do NOT watch 'In The Beginning' first as that list suggests. Seriously, *huge* spoilers. ITB is a prequel story that fills in a lot of blanks, so it is best left until at least after season 4.

Simplest thing to do it watch 'The Gathering' (special edition preferably) then the five seasons, then the movies in whatever order you feel like. Really, aside from 'A Call to Arms' which was a transition into the 'Crusade' spin-off, they're just stand alone stories and once you've seen the show already, it doesn't matter which order you view them in.

Ah ok, cheers Rev. :techman:

If by debunked, you mean denied by fans of DS9 who haven't done their research, you could be right.

Do us all a favour and shut the fuck up. No-one is interested in rehashing this DS9 vs B5 bullshit that has dragged on for years. Grow the fuck up and get over it.

Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?

Grow a thicker skin, grow up, and learn to use grown-up talk. Or take it to TNZ.

I don't use my mouth to type.

And on the subject, it's got nothing to do with thicker skins, as I don't have a vested interest in either side of the argument. It is, however, plainly obvious that you're looking to rile up the DS9 fans by resurrecting this old, and frankly tired, "DS9 ripped off B5" argument.

It's been 17 years, even Straczynski doesn't give a shit anymore. Get over it and stop crying about irrelevant shit.

Obviously, YOU care, or you wouldn't be freaking out and going off the rails like this.

I'm not crying. I was on GEnie in '92-'93 when JMS was posting about B5 before production had even started. I KNOW which came first.

I also am a huge DS9 fan, liking it better than TNG and MUCH better than VOY. I just like people to have their facts straight.

So stop freaking out and do your research sometime, or close your trap.

Your protests would carry much more weight if you hadn't taken the opportunity to throw in the standard "I'm right and those who don't agree with me are obviously wrong and haven't done their research" trope into your response. Give me a fucking break.
