Prometheus: Ridley Scott returns to Sci-Fi

My mothers mini cooper is the same colour and model as my best friends. Obviously they must be the same car.

Scott's repeatedly said that its not that kind of a prequel, its not going to lead straight into Alien. And that derelict was old enough for the biomechanical stuff to become partially fossilised which doesnt mesh up with the time frame of 'Prometheus' unless time travel is involved.

 

Lindelof and time travel? Nah, that's totally unlikely.

Scott has said that the planetary system that is explored in Prometheus is the same as the one in Alien.

Which is why I said "very similar" and I "bet".
Would you be able to tell the difference between these words?

If I saw one of those ships sinking on the news and then later I saw another news piece showing the wreckage of a vessel that looks the same I might make the connection that they could be the same without knowing the full story.

The biggest problem I had when I watched Alien for the first time a few years ago was the fact that I'd seen similar stories numerous times in other productions, so for me it was pretty much same old same old. Don't get me wrong, it's a very well made movie, and I have a feeling if I'd seen it when it first came out it probably would have blown my mind. But now it just felt like all of the other murderous alien on the lose stories I've seen before. I'm thinking I might have to watch it again now though, and see if I feel any different.

 

Considering it was one of the pioneers for those kinds of movies, I think you ruined it by watching those knockoffs before that one, haha.

 

See, this is the major problem with reboots and remakes and ripoffs. When people finally get around watching the actual original, they go "Meh."

 

Well it's a stretch, but maybe the severe weather conditions on the planet were enough to age the ship to the condition we see it in Alien.

It certainly could be a different ship (with tons of identical ones being sent out across the universe to "seed" different planets with different organisms or something), but at the moment I'm still inclined to think it's the same ship.

Because why go through the trouble of recreating such memorable, iconic sets and NOT have them be the same ones we saw before? It just seems kind of odd to me.

 

So Human DNA in a can. Just add water and mix. We don't have to worry about that until it starts snowing oregano, I guess. Food of the Gods.

 

We'll have to wait for the movie to come out to see. For all we know the film is about finding a whole fleet of these things. All we've seen after all is a *teaser*, not even a full trailer and it wasn't exactly shy about recalling imagery from 'Alien'. For all we know, every shot is totally (and intentionally) out of context to provoke a certain response.

Remember, teasers and trailers are meant to make you want to go see the film! They're not supposed to explain the entire plot.

Personally, I think it's a different ship. Still, I'll admit that the odds of two human vessels running into two of these things by chance in the space of a few decades are pretty slim. Whatever the circumstances, I highly doubt the two incidents are entirely unrelated.

 

That's a dying art. Nowadays movies are even more geared towards the lowest common denominator (Michael Bay, Jerry Bruckheimer, ...) and all the scenes not shown in the trailer aren't worth the money.

 

Fortunately, Scott isn't one of those hacks.

 

Excepting, of course, in the opinion of xortex.

 

My theory is that it is a different ship, but finding it makes someone decide to secretly send ships out looking for them, and that somehow it's going to turn out the Nostromo was actually out looking for more of the ships.

 

Not to derail the thread but Charlize looks more than gorgeous than her usual gorgeous self in the movie!

 

There were certainly clues in the original film that the company had some idea what was in that system. The last minute inclusion of Ash for example.

Still, there's no way the whole point of the Nostromo's mission was to find that ship. I mean if the company knew for sure what was there then they'd mount a proper expedition.

The way I suspect it went down was that someone in the company in a middling position (not unlike Burke) had access to data on the possibility of some kind of xenoarchaeological find somewhere in that system. So they arranged for a company synthetic to be quietly assigned to all their ships that passed near it and it just happened that the Nostromo's flight vector brought it in range of the distress/warning beacon.

If this film leads into that at all it'll be said data on more ships getting back to the company.

 

Why are we not calling this the second worst movie ever made? Damon Lindelof did write about 85% of it.

 

Because it's not out yet and we haven't seen it? Wait, what's the first worst movie ever made? Am I feeding a troll?
