Blast from the Past: 10 Facts About Yourself

Gryffindorian

Vice Admiral

Over a year ago, I posted a thread here in the MISC Forum asking people to post 10 facts about themselves. Thanks to all who participated and for sharing your personality traits, likes and dislikes, and life experiences. It was fun and enlightening. :) Posted below are responses from your fellow BBSers (edited for content, not including replies and trivial conversations in between). Happy reading!

It's been a while since we last did a "getting to know you" thread, so let's get it rolling again. Post 10 trivial/factual statements about yourself; you can be as specific or as vague as you like. The only rule is that your post has to have something to do with you personally, not, "When I was a kid, my dad got promoted to a four-star general in the U.S. Army, or "My friends think I'm shy." It's not about your friend, relative, classmate, neighbor, or co-worker.
I'm the youngest of six children; I have four older sisters and a brother.
I eat fast, though not always on purpose. I can finish a good-sized dish in less than 10 minutes.
I shower twice a day: once in the morning before going to work and once in the evening after my workout.
I tend to get irritable at times, even with the littlest things, probably because of my anxiety and/or diabetes.
In the summer I always sleep with the fan on, and in the winter, with the portable heater on. I need the "white noise" to fall asleep.
I'm bilingual in English/Tagalog (Filipino) and have studied Spanish extensively. When I was a teenager, I also self-studied Italian and Russian and am familiar with a few phrases and the pronunciations.
I almost always drink coffee (Starbucks mostly) to get through the day, especially the afternoon commute.
I would like to do more traveling. I love going to Las Vegas but would also like to go on a cruise or visit places like Hawaii, Ireland, London, etc.
I'm a collector of sorts. I have a wide selection of books and comics, magazines, DVDs and Blu-Rays, and sci-fi/fantasy memorabilia. Hopefully, I don't end up like one of these hoarders you see on TV.
Although I don't consider myself a "people person," I get along really well with almost everyone.

Here are ten facts that are truly telling of my personality, not just my stats:

1. I am a capable manipulator, but I rarely wield this power, and then only for Good. Mostly.

2. I was raised Agnostic and experienced many religions growing up via my mother's search for spirituality (we were Christian for a while, Jewish for a few years, Buddhist, etc). I am Atheist, and do my very best to respect others' beliefs. I always behave respectfully, but, though I find religion fascinating on an intellectual level -- like a good novel -- I can't help but feel that people who actually believe that nonsense are being duped.

3. I always win Jeopardy when I play along, but will never try out for fear that, should I be selected to compete, I'd fail in embarrassment due to an overrepresentation of questions about sports.

4. I believe wholeheartedly in both Capitalism and Socialism, and think an ideal society would find the two working together in harmony. I think this is unlikely to be achieved, but some nations are close to it.

5. I'm a polymath.

6. I think anyone without baggage is either lying or boring. I am not interested in dull liars.

7. I've only just recently, at 27, developed an interest in having a relationship. I've had flings, but never fallen in love. I've never felt I needed a man to complete my life or make me happy, but I am starting to feel that it'd be nice to be in love. Perhaps it's my biological clock kicking in.

8. The amount of awe and wonder with which some properties of physics, mathematics, and good music fill me is often enough to make me cry. I love science.

9. I can draw with photographic realism, but much prefer my own, twisted versions of reality.

10. I'm a really cool person, and a good person, I think, but I treat myself more cruelly than I could ever imagine treating another. I don't think this is uncommon.

10. I'm polyamorous and most people don't know what that means or have really weird assumptions about it.

1. I’m the older of two brothers.

2. I grew up in the suburban San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, where the Valley Girls come from.

3. I’ve been an atheist since the age of nine.

4. There’s never been any regularity in my eating habits, sleeping habits, or bowel habits.

5. I’ve had plenty of art lessons over the years, but I would never presume to call myself an artist. Mainly because, technically, I can’t draw.

6. I took two years of Spanish in high school, but I only remember enough of the language to have a conversation with two people named Pablo and Luisa -- if one of them is well and the other has a cold.

7. I hate dressing up. The number of times in my whole life that I’ve worn a coat and tie can be counted on my fingers and toes.

8. I have never smoked tobacco, and I only drink alcohol at social occasions where I might have a glass of wine. With my busy social schedule, that means I have maybe two glasses of wine a year. I’ve smoked marijuana about four or five times, and it never seems to do much for me. Maybe it just wasn’t very good shit.

9. I can hum Johann Strauss’ “Blue Danube” waltz in its entirety.

10. Every car I’ve owned has had a stick shift. To me, driving with an automatic transmission is just aiming the car, not driving.

1. Only child, but i would have liked siblings.

6. I've finished one story since I wrote that post. Too much work and schoolwork. I spend most of me time in the workshop nowadays. Fixing and building cars has both been work for me, and a way to relax and escape reality. "Life seems so much simpler when you're fixing things." Anakin Skywalker (SW: AOTC)
7. As you might've noticed above, me grammar is shite. Its because me girlfriend is British (Manchester) and I involuntarily picked up her accent. Which on occasion bleeds into me writing as well. I'm too lazy to correct it nowadays. So either yell at me or live with it.

Oh gone on then.....
I have five assorted siblings (all younger than me), ages 7 through 39.
I'm a direct descendent of a well-known inventor and road builder.
I have one leg that's 1.25 inches shorter than the other (the legacy of a childhood traffic accident) and have to wear orthotically-modified footwear to avoid knee & back problems. Makes shoe shopping a bit of a hassle as I can't wear trainers, slippers or anything with soft soles or walk around barefooted for any length of time.
I went to school with a future Premiership footballer and an Oscar-winning film scriptwriter.
I don't drink coffee or tea.
One of my cousins is a high-flying music industry executive and married to a UK TV presenter.
I've spent most of my working life in I.T in the education sector.
I'm an avid music fan - I own over 1200 different albums (and counting).
I'm right-handed but bat, type and play golf left-handed.
I have the knack of being able to get up at any hour of the night, no matter how extreme, if I know I have to be up (without the need for an alarm clock). This has come in pretty useful over the years when meeting overnight flights at local airports or getting up to catch very early trains/make long car journeys.

Okay, here we go. Have tried to go mostly original, but I gotta steal first one a bit from tsq, with some modifications.
1. I am Atheist, and do my very best to respect others' beliefs. I mostly behave respectfully, but, though I find religion fascinating on an intellectual level - like a good novel - I can't help but feel that people who actually believe that nonsense are being duped. That being said I love Norse mythology.
2. My name is a Viking name, hence a bit of my interest in Norse mythology.
3. Eldest of four, and thus have quite a bit of a big brother complex. I take care of everyone. One of the reasons I'd really like a girlfriend is because I'd like someone to care of me for a change. Just a little bit.
4. Been overweight and had glasses since I was 10. Something that led to ammo for bullies way back when. These days I like my glasses and relish when I have to get new ones and get some that look really great. I'm okay with my weight but constantly seek to lose weight. I'd love to get down to about 220.
5. Pretty tall at 6'3", but would love to be about four inches shorter. Especially since I'm a bit disproportionate and tall in the upperbody.
6. Really attracted to women around a foot shorter then me. Again, probably a bit of the big brother complex. Laso under same category, I prefer women with shapes. Skinny girls I don't get the appeal for.
7. I'm pretty good at talking to girls and women, but I'm terribly at getting to the step of being anything more then just the friend.
8. I live in Sweden since birth, but I HATE winter. Would much rather live somehwere warmer.
9. I'm a film nut, and it's a BIG part of who I am. Favorite film is forrest Gump.
10. Also a big car guy, especially like muscle cars, and then in particular the new Chevrolet Camaro SS (my favorite car ever). In spite of this, I don't have an issue with my manhood, and my penis is quite respectable at 7 inches.

Posted by J.Ashmore, December 23 2010 04:09 PM

Ok, I'm posting again because, as I mentioned in another thread, I'm dead bored.
1) I have not ingested a carbonated drink in over a year. I gave up soda, or "pop" as we call it in my neck of the country, in October of 2009 and not have had a drop since then. Nor do I drink sparkling water or juice (can't stand the stuff!)
2) Not only do I have a male cat named Mr. Cat, I used to have a black lab named Ebony. We're very creative when it comes to naming our animals.
3) Speaking of pets, we have 2 cats (Sophie and Mr.Cat) 3 horses (Erma, Lakota, and Fiddle) and I own a fish (Sigmund Ozymandius.) I love animals!
4) My dream (well, one of them) is to work with the mountain gorillas in Africa, a la Dian Fossey. I have contacted many organizations and offered my assistance. I would love to just leave all of my urban luxuries behind and spontaneously fly to Africa.
5) I am an avid local news watcher.
6) I love naps almost as much as I love being alive.
7) I wish I could travel the world, and am planning a road trip this summer to tour the continental US.
8) The two most beautiful places I have ever been are Cannes, France and Alaska.
9) My time at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida would probably be considered the happiest time in my life.
10) I'm going on my 6th cup of coffee in the past 2 hours.

1. I rarely drink. Naturally, people treat me like a leper because of this. It pisses me off. Interacting with drunk people is something I'll go out of my way to avoid, even if it means sitting in on my own rather than going to some party with people old enough to know better.
2. It takes me a long time to relax around people I don't know. My Christmas Day was basically ruined by my sister bringing her chav boyfriend with her. He got too drunk. I spent the entire day on edge and being short with everyone.
3. I'm a bit of a Harry Potter fan but I have no intention of ever reading the books. I find the movies fascinating and 8 movies with [largely] the same cast all produced within a decade is surely a cinematic first. I love the screen versions of the characters and from the passages of books I have read, Harry is dick, Ron is a moron and Hermione is always crying.
4. People always underestimate my appreciation of time to myself. Sometimes someone will ask me what I'm doing that evening and I'll say "Nothing" which naturally leads to them saying "Oh, well you can come along to...". Guys, I'm planning on doing nothing. That's my actual evening's plan. It's not a 'please invite or suggest something to me' nothing.
5. Animals are rad.
6. It's been 5 years since I last dated. It's quite weird, really. I'm sure if I really tried I could land someone but I just don't seem to have that "oh my God, I must have a partner otherwise I failed at life!" mentality that others have. The courting process is insanely cringe-worthy at the best of times so I'd like to experience that aspect as little as possible.
7. I have no ambition in my current employment. I'm happy where I am and with the responsibilities I have. However, given that I work for a global company this viewed as a position of weakness and thus I get frequently shafted. I'm underpaid by a significant margin because I had the temerity to already be employed by the company and shift position whereas a new starter could walk into the same role as me on a significantly higher salary.
8. I like football a lot but often undersell my appreciation for the sport to others as I find the inevitable talk of players and tactics to be something reserved for middle-aged men in a pub killing time to avoid going home to their wives.
9. I'm bald. Well, not bald bald, but bald enough that I need to give it a regular buzz to avoid looking like a loser working in an office. It sucks. The only look you have going for you is to be thin and wear glasses or grow a beard of some description. Wearing a hat and then taking it off is like some big reveal. You know that anyone who sees you just goes "Hey, he's bald..."...
10. Some misc. facts - Bangers and mash rules, Pro-Wrestling is a guilty pleasure, iphones and the like piss me off, who the fuck is Katy Perry?, The Avengers is a good movie, one of my favourite bands is Okkervil River who my old band supported twice a few years ago, I only ever wear off-white high top converse which was quite annoying when it became synonymous with the 10th Doctor.

3) I hate Albuquerque with a passion greater than a thousand suns. I cannot wait to return to Texas where sanity is more objective.

6) I love my truck. I find that it's better than a dog in many ways, less feces and more force.

I feel like I've helped move this conversation away from the original wishes of the thread so I'll post another 10 facts:
1. I own all but two of Renee Fleming's CDs and own three operas on DVD and one on CD, all with her in the respected lead role.
2. I love watching NFL games and am a Vikings fan (though this season I'm a little hesitant to say anything) I couldn't believe they won against the Eagles last night. Woo!
3. I just ate Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast with a large cup of coffee.
4. Since I've been home from college, I've slept on the couch every night and I couldn't be happier!
5. All in a matter of 4 months, I hit a 9pt buck (5x4 deer) with my vehicle, fixed it up with used body parts from an identicle car, then proceeded to roll it in the ditch. I wasn't severly hurt, but did have a severe concussion.
6. The town I grew up and lived in had less people in it than my graduating class.
7. I received a $25 gift card for barnes and noble for Christmas and the same day I got it, I spent it on the Star Trek CD with all the music from the movies and shows, and a collector's pack of all the TNG movies. I felt really good about this purchase.
8. I can't wear socks to bed.
9. I get claustrophobic if blankets cover my face and I breath in hot air. I also get claustrophobic if the air conditioner in a car doesn't work, so I have to always have a window open during the summer.
10. I love, love, LOVE Holdfast's avatar!

Posted by Alpinemaps, December 29 2010 01:54 PM

Okay, guess it's my turn to play. I'm mostly a lurker these days, but I've been enjoying this thread, even if I haven't read every single list. So, here's 10 to start (and I have more, too!)
1. My wife and I met in 1991, at the age of 18 (me) and 17 (her). We dated for 8 years before we got married (1999), and then waited until 2008 to have our first child. 2011 will be 20 years since we met.
2. I met my wife online, via email, before most people knew what BBS or email meant (1991). When I would tell people that I met her online, they'd ask if I met her through a computerized dating service.
3. I have a Bachelor's of Science degree in geographer, and my official job series within the federal government is 'Geographer'. I used to make maps every day, but now I just supervise my program. I am still considered the expert in cartography for the Marine Corps. There's no one else that has my experience in making maps that works for the Marines.
4. I got my love of maps when I was 3 years old. My mom gave me a puzzle that I would, literally, take apart and put together for hours on end. Later, my step-mother and dad would hand me a Thomas Bros map in the car, and tell me to read it to keep me quiet.
5. I never wanted to have children until I read the book 'The Time Traveler's Wife'. After that, I realized I needed to have a child.
6. I hate sleep. It's a waste of time. If I could take a pill that would let me stay up 24 hours a day, I would do it. I can't stand taking naps - it just makes me useless the rest of the day.
7. I have taken at least one photograph of my daughter every day of her life. She'll be 3 in January.
8. I've been published many many times, but don't keep track of most of it. I've had a National Geographic book published that was solely my work, and I've had maps show up on CNN. While I don't get 'fan mail', a couple times a month, I do get contacted about a paper I've written or a map I've produced.
9. I once got into an argument with Lou Ferrigno ('The Incredible Hulk') over whether he could charge for an autograph. I won the argument, and declined the autograph.
10. I'm a huge baseball fan. I traveled to Cooperstown, New York in 2007 to see Tony Gwynn get inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame. I've seen the home stadium of 11 different teams (9 majors, 2 minor). I've been to a Padres game every year since 1982. A couple of years ago, I flew to the Bay Area, caught a day-night double header (one game in Oakland, one in San Francisco), and then caught a game in San Diego the next day. It was '27 Innings in 27 hours'. Despite that, I've never seen a no-hitter or perfect game in person, nor have I ever seen a triple play live.

To be continued ...

3. I get attached easily to dogs
Funny... we just rescued another dog from the side of the road.

Me grandfather once found four puppies in the severs. Heard them while walking home from work. But by the time he got them out only one was alive. People claim he was the most well behaved and loyal dog in the city. And its a big bloody city.

More facts:

1. I am a hypochondriac.
2. I shave my head each and every morning. Strangely enough I rarely get cuts.
3. My favorite baseball player is not a member of either of my favorite teams. He's Dave Dravecky, who used to play for the Padres and Giants. Twenty years ago he lost his left arm to cancer. He and his wife now have an outreach ministry.
4. I know precisely zilch about football. I cannot enjoy it like a fan would. I do go to Husker games, but to this day I really don't understand what's going on as far as field action goes. I can BARELY follow the game, I just find it confounding.
5. My favorite US accent is NY; favorite foreign accent is Irish.
6. I attend a 'contemporary' church. It is, however, still Lutheran (which I gladly am). Here it is.
7. I am on a mission to see every ball park in Major League Baseball. My next parks will be for the Marlins, Phillies and Orioles. In that order, I think.
8. My favorite broadcasters: Eric Nadel and Steve Busby (Rangers radio), Michael Kay and John Flaherty (Yankees TV). (Least favorite: Ken Harrelson :brickwall: )
9. My father is just this side of a living god in my mind. He and I get along great, and I learned everything I know from him.
10. I have no kids or pets.

4. I want to get married one day. Hopefully it'll be legal for me to.
5. The last time i had any action was a year and a half ago.
6. I am a huge fan of the first 8 seasons of The Simpsons. The show went downhill after that.
7. I help to take care of my niece and nephew, without compensation, and without ever being asked. That's caused me to resent my brother a lot, since they're his kids, not mine.
8. My birthday is on New Year's Day.
9. I HATE the Rose Parade.
10. I have a boisterous American laugh.

Yikes, how my life has changed in a year. I'll add just one more:

11. I am a fighter/survivor. The tumor didn't have a chance. Of course, that's not all my doing. My neurosurgeon is, to use Mr. Laser Beam's phrase above, just this side of a living god.

After reading that I can see I was being slightly silly.

ok I guess I can come up with 10 slightly more serious ones...

1. I was trained in commercial art and have dabbled in it work-wise though have never done it professionally for any length of time. I am currently doing side work designing logos for a website.
2. I'm a certified personal trainer on the side.
3. I was 5'11" and 185 pounds when I was 13 years old. 200+pounds at 14.
4. I am currently working on creations for virtual worlds in preparation for when the singularity melds the physical world with virtual artificial intelligence...at least that's the general idea.
5. I have had a good-sized book collection numbering in the 400 range. I now have 200+ physical books plus almost 600 e-books.
6. I have a primary job working for a fortune 500 company.
7. I recently set a plan in motion for my "first retirement" 9 years from now.
8. I never did that photo shoot I mentioned, however I have been offered 4 MORE since, including an S&M bodybuilding shoot.
9. I became an atheist at about 13 years old.
10. I became a Trekker around 14 years old..a very good exchange by my reckoning.

I actually could do a lot more than 10 but I'll spare you all. :techman:

1.) I graduated a year later from high school because I spent much of my childhood overseas.

2.) I'm an Army brat

3.) I chased a girl to England for love

4.) I married her

5.) I still am

6.) I have always enjoyed martial arts

7.) I grew up on TOS

8.) I love a good party, but I rarely drink these days - left those days behind in the military

9.) I enjoy a good and happy life, and that is enough to be considered a success

10.) I don't fear confrontation, but I forget it as soon as it's over. I don't carry shit that's happened around with me, and laugh at people who hold grudges. Grow up, I say!

1. Witnessed every manned Apollo Saturn V launch from Cape Canaveral.
2. Met many of the Apollo astronauts when I was very young
3. Worked with nuclear weapon system electronics
4. Graduated from H/S 1 year early
5. Have 3 fine sons..and 1 lovely stepdaughter
6. Saw Star Trek in it's first run..
7. Been working with electronics since I was 17 years old.
8. Traveled all over the world..and still want to do more.
9. Happly married to my dear wife..
10. GET OFF MY LAWN!!..ohh sorry..My wife thinks I'm awesome!!

This looks like fun. Here goes:

1: I have a box in my room which is slowly being filled with what I deem "interesting" things. Rocks, fossils, cultural oddities; whenever I or anyone in my family go somewhere, something returns for the box. I have, for example, a rock my grandparents picked from the floor of the Grand Canyon, a rock my other grandmother picked from the crater of Mount Vesuvius, a vial of Maltese holy water, a Spinosaur tooth, a piece of the Berlin Wall, etc...

2: I have very poor balance and coordination. I can't dance, I can't ride a bike, and I sometimes come close to falling over when I stand. Well, I tend to stumble to one side a bit, anyway. Nothing serious.

3: My ideal "career" would be simply caring for my future children (and presumably also working part time or doing voluntary work once they're in school). Of course, this depends on finding a symbiosis with a career-driven woman who wants children and values a nice domestic family...

4: I don't have any religion, I'm not affiliated with any political party (or particular ideological movement) and I'm not particularly patriotic. I just don't seem to have much of an instinct for cultural-group identification.

5: My favourite animals tend to be the ones that other people dislike or have mild phobias of; snakes, bats and snails being some of the most prominent. I also like large fish; I don’t know why, but something about them soothes me.

6: I’m strangely small, slim and light-weight for a man of my family. My father, grandfather and great-grandfather are or were large and broad, and above-average in height. I’m not.

7: As a child, I had several hundred imaginary friends, mostly various animals. As I grew older, they became more of a hassle and I decided to get rid of them. I didn’t want to just forget them, though, so I sat down one day and spent an hour or so giving them a grand finale and a warm goodbye, then they sailed off over the sea to find a new home. I trust they arrived safely and are still out there.;)

8: I used to practice deep meditation, but I stopped after a poor experience where an excited scream from outside smashed into my concentration at an essential moment. It actually caused me to become genuinely shaken, and since I knew I wasn't guaranteed quiet, I gave it up.

9: I like my food as plain and bland as possible, partly because my sense of taste is very acute. I eat plain bread and am always being told "you can't eat it like that! Put something on it!"

10: I really like children, and spent several years performing voluntary work for the Young Carers (giving children with severely disabled parents or siblings a place to let loose and be the centre of attention for a while, which they naturally didn't get at home).
