Best Episodes of Season One

Even though season one is a bit of a struggle to get through, I also enjoyed Arsenal of Freedom and Heart of Glory.
The first episode I ever saw was Conspiracy, it got me hooked on TNG and I still enjoy it. Skin of Evil may also deserve to be on the list of better episodes.

The Neutral Zone. We did start to see more of the Romulans after that episode. It also was a hint/nudge to the Borg. It technically is the first time you encounter the Borg. Even though we did not see the Borg we did encounter them because of their actions.

" ie "episodes *i* liked that no one else seemed to be quite as enthusiastic about" - include "the naked now," "lonely among us," and "heart of glory."

I'm glad to see someone mention "The Naked Now." It's great for a giggle. I am in the process of rewatching season one. So far, I've enjoyed "The Naked Now" and "Where No One Has Gone Before" the most. I'll post again when I get further into the season.

Lately I would pick "The Big Goodbye" and "11001001"

Conspiracy is pretty good but I've seen it too many times

Okay, now that I've finished my re-watch of Season One, the ones I really enjoyed are:

The Naked Now
Where No One Has Gone Before
Haven
When the Bough Breaks
Coming of Age
Arsenal of Freedom
Symbiosis
Conspiracy
The Neutral Zone

Not sure I could pick out a favorite or two within that weird group.

I agree that overall the first season certainly isn't very strong story-wise. But I still prefer the general mood and style of these early episodes. Also, in most cases the music is better and the cinematography and lighting looks more interesting than in later seasons.

I agree. I enjoy most of the episodes from the first season, but at the same time realize that they cater primarily to the hardcore Star Trek loyal fanbase than to the casual mainstream viewers.

Episodes like "Datalore," "11001001," "The Big Goodbye," and "Conspiracy" may delight the fans, but it was primarily with later powerhouse episodes such as "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "The Best of Both Worlds, Parts I and II" that drew new viewers in.

I think two of the better episodes from season one were "The Big Goodbye" and "Conspiracy."

I liked Conspiracy quite a bit, although I was disappointed when it was revealed that there was no real conspiracy and that it was just parasites controlling Starfleet Officers. A real conspiracy would have made for a more interesting story,

That was the original plan, but Gene put his foot down and insisted on his "perfect future, perfect people" version.

Encounter at Farpoint and Conspiracy were my favourite episodes in Season 1

Agreed!

Here are some of my reviews:

"Encounter at Farpoint" (TNG) -

It's a good introduction to the TNG cast with a great adversary to kick off the first episode. Patrick Stewart still had a few seasons left in him to become comfortable with his role, but Jonathan Frakes got off the ground running with Riker and Brent Spiner showed promise of what was to come for Data with his initial portrayal of the never-aging android. I was impressed with the updated special-effects and the upgraded sets compared to the original show. Highlights included Q's grid, the saucer separation sequence, and the cameo by DeForest Kelley.

"Hide and Q" (TNG) -

A good parable to Jesus Christ's temptation by the devil while he was fasting in the desert for 40 days. The visuals pretty much tell the entire story without even needing the dialogue. Frakes does a solid job here as Riker as he holds his own against de Lancie and Stewart. This was the episode that introduced Picard's Shakespeare tome. Highlights for me included the scene where Q turns into Data and Riker giving gifts to his crewmates -- including turning Wesley into a youngman who looked nothing like him by the time of Star Trek: Nemesis.
