Kinda maudlin for my taste. Well made, though.

Silly Whimey Christmas Fun - Just what the Doctor ordered :p

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I thought it was on the okay side, a romp, a bit of fun. Two larger things concern me.

One, as someone said upthread, Moffatt must have too many yes men around him. As I said, I enjoyed it, but the writing was... flabby. Large stretches, not much happened. And Bill Bailey was wasted. The 'rescue' of the dad was a tad predictable and cheesy, but I'm a sucker for a happy ending. Something's lacking.

Two, the Ponds were weird. Or more correctly, the actors. Gillan was made up to the nines, what the hell was that about? I mean she's pretty, but I dunno, overdone for xmas dinner. And Darvill seemed like he didn't want to be there at all. It was odd.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Predictable family TV. I'm sure the 6-12 crowd loved it. It's a Christmas version of "Night Terrors". Thankfully, the Christmas version is better.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Pretty lame story, and it actually made me long for the days when Christmas meant that aliens were trying to destroy London.

However, the final scene with Amy and Rory was one of the most heartfelt things I've seen in a long time. If other people hadn't been in the room with me, I probably would have started balling. The Doctor has had companions, great friends, and even fallen in love before...but now, for the first time since he started traveling on his own, he has a family! Ugh, I want to cry.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I liked the "doesn't work on wood" gag brought back. That was actually pretty clever.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Rather decent story. It was what it was, entertaining fluff. I thought it was quite well done and a little emotional, which is always good. I did manage to care about those characters in the short time we knew them, so it was quite nice to see the whole family reunited. It wasn't the best Xmas episode, but I don't think it needed to be.

Final scene with Amy and Rory was :adore: though. Loved it.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Complete fucking shit. Spectrox toxaemia looked more fun. Doctor Who now is the result of a previously not untalented man with complete control and no one to say no to him, convinced of his own cleverness and brilliance because no one around him's going to say otherwise.

Fan- Is there no on to stop you?

Moffat- I'm not just the executive producer, i'm the winner.

Executive Producer Victorious

It looked like makeup department put all the powder on her face.

Darvil looked older somehow. He could really pass as being two years older in the future.

And Amy has become the mean woman on block?

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Amy and Rory seemed to be acting perfectly in character to me.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I was half expecting a reveal of another child in the end scene actually. Enough time had passed for Amy and Rory to have one. I loved the comment about River from Amy. Rory looked a little scruffier than usual. Amy looked just fine to me. I like the fact that Amy and Rory represent a family for the Doctor. I almost thought he was going to turn around and head back into the Tardis and leave them, not able to bring himself to be happy for once but I was pleasantly surprised that he stayed...and shed a tear of happiness. I think the end was one of those few instances since the end of the Time War where he's allowed himself to feel truly happy and not feel guilty about it.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I thought Amy and Rory looked older. Logical, since two years have passed. But of course, now they're going to need to look two years older next season. Unless something wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey de-ages them for some reason.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

I don't think they looked that much older. I'm pretty sure Rory's age was accomplished by parting his hair and making him wear that old man sweater. It wasn't exactly difficult.

So did I but obviously that wasn't going to happen because there's no way Amy and Rory would run off for more adventures with The Doctor if they had a baby in the picture.

I honestly thought Amy had a little baby bump under her giant sweater. I was expecting her to announce that she was pregnant again...this time, without a time baby.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Make sense, damnit! Make sense.

The show seems to be working on a certain frequency of "fun". If you can manage to tune into that specific wavelength you're going to have a blast, but, well, if you can't it's going to be painful and annoying. I found it painful and annoying.

Awesome ending though.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Somehow I wondered about another kid as well. Quite weird that so many people thought that. If they go back on adventures next season, it wouldn't make sense, though.

Making sense doesn't seem to be one of their biggest priorities these days.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

We watched "A Christmas Carol" again, today. Both my wife & I thought that the actor who played the young Kazran could have been Arthur Darvill at an early age. He almost had Rory's mannerisms and vocal inflection.

Re: The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe(Grading/Discussion) SPOILER

Watched it again today, and its a lot more tolerable the second time around (and I'm feeling a lot less grumpy)

Thinking about it, I've come to the conclusion that with the fact that they were 'Androzani trees', and the lack of animal life, that the planet was actually just one giant terraformed tree farm thats harvested every century or so.(I don't feel quite so badly about the planets surface being melted)
Makes you wonder though if letting the life force escape affected the forests usefulness as a power source.
