It also doesn't help that the first AVP (which was PG-13) turned out to be the most successful financially of the entire franchise. Oh well, will just wait and see what develops. I'll probably still go see it regardless but I hope they make the correct choice and not water it down for a mass audience.

Whatever differences there are between the two versions would probably be VERY minor. There might be a few less shots of blood and gore (and a bit less cussing), but I doubt Ridley would want to go overboard with that stuff anyway.

Yeah, I don't get why it's so upsetting that the movie will only be PG-13. I doubt the story of the movie is dependant on there being blood, guts, swearing and nudity. Granted, it's nice to see those things, but as long as we get a decent story all the same, I can deal with waiting for the DVD for things like that.

This doesn't feel like anyone's dream project here, just a shoot 'em up exploitation film cashing in on the Alien franchise and pretending to take on legitimite sci -fi concepts like 'the gods' in a legitimite way. When a television guy writes a movie. I always feel that way.

The original Alien would be PG-13 by today's standards anyway. I don't get why people want everything covered in blood and intestines. Or maybe because the characters have to wash themselves then, so there can be shower scenes.

Yeah we just wanna watch some naked chick and blood spattering.

Alien films were of a Horror sci-fi genre with dark overtones and realistic human characters.
When John Hurt has a bad case of food poisoning it is stressful and disturbing to watch for us and the characters. When his chest bursts open and blood spatters on those around him you get the sense that real bad shit has gone down here and considering how messed up it looked it adds to a far more horrifying situation and sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

Can you imagine PG-13 with no blood spatter and it been less graphic than an R rating? How much impact would that scene lose and how much of the rest of the movie would be as thrilling if it were unrealistic violence happening to seemingly real (in the movie setting at least) people.
I didn't go "Wow cool!" when that John Hurts stomach went pop. But if it was less gory and bloody I may have been more comfortable to do so and not care.

When someone gets shot a dozen times in a PG-13 film and doesn't bleed then it's fantasy, it's less tragic to watch. It's just violent entertainment instead of violence.

I "SAW" what you did there. Slam-dunk argument, that.

As has been said before, today's PG-13 is yesterday's R. You can have plenty of blood and guts, and more than a bit of nudity. Network TV gets away with gore that would have been R rated a few decades ago.

More impprtantly, does the Prometheus story require an R rating? Does anyone here know? Without that knowledge there is no reason in the slightest to fret about the rating. I'm fairly certain Ridley Scott has the clout to demand an R rating if he deems it necessary.

Who wrote the Alien movie concept? if there is one, besides Geiger? I was hoping he would use the universe as a launching point for sequels that get away from and compartmentalize the aliens as like he said, biological weapons used by the 'gods', and horror and give us more clean sci fi. Life is horrible enough. They rushed into this.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that today's PG-13 is yesterday's R. Sure we have movies such as "The Dark Knight" that are pretty heavy but I do think the Joker of that movie would be more likely to Stab a calling card into somebody's chest rather than staple it on, which is what we saw in the final film. I also think if we saw him actually cut somebodies face he might be seen as a far more nasty person and threat rather than a symbolic one of Chaos.

I don't think Prometheus needs to be R. But it doesn't need to be Pg-13 either. Unfortunately money talks and the art form has to pander to that sometimes. But I just want to see the Director make the best film that he could without the compromise of having to satisfy the over worried parents of a younger audience.

When I was younger there were a lot more R rated movies that I as a kid had to either rent/borrow on Video or sneak in and lie about my age at the cinema. I think there's more appeal about those movies because they have a bit more clout in the way they tell a story and visualize it.

I also prefer it when a character with a loose tongue like John Mcclain can say the F word more than once. Just suits the character that we know and love and grew up with.

Dude this friggin' Ridley Scott we're talking about here. If this was just a "shoot-em up exploitation film", then there is almost no way he would be involved. Even if all of his films haven't been absolute masterpieces, I don't think any of them would fall into that category.
And what does a television guy writting it have to do with anything? There are alot of people who have written for both film and TV. Honestly, other than the length of the stories there's really no difference between writing for TV and writing for movies, they're pretty much the same thing when you boil it down. Hell, most of what's on TV is smarter than what we get in movies, so the fact that the writer has written for TV would mean, IMO at least, that we're more likely to get a more intelligent script that if it was a guy who'd been writing blockbuster movies for decades. Not to mention that it's one of the showrunners of Lost, and even if it didn't tie everything up in a way that satisfied everyone, I don't think anyone would describe it as "shoot-em up exploitation".

It's easy to confuse the reel world (sci fi, art, what have you) with the real world ($$$$ game) especially when you're altruistic like he is. The guys at bad robot and lost are scam artists to me - good ones. Hey, I hope not, but I don't care.

Presumably you mean Ridley Scott, not Giger. Giger just designed the xenomorph, he had no involvement with the actual story.

And Prometheus is doing exactly what you've asked for. Scott has repeatedly said that its not a direct prequel to Alien. We arent going to see how the derelict crashed, or why its jam packed with eggs. This is taking the unanswered questions of Alien as a starting point and shooting off in a whole different direction.

As for rushing into this, its taken Scott 33 years to return to the universe his film created, how on earth can that be considered rushing?

Yet another poster who doesn't care - yet cares enough to post that he doesn't care, just so we know. Thanks! What would we have done without this knowledge? ;)

It's easy to forget. Money and power are very seductive as GR could probably attest to picking Berman to replace him and all for twenty years, the Coto, now this JJ clown in center stage with all the power and money and with sharks swarming around him all with little real imagination.

So essentially they are scam artists because they aren't writing what you want them to? Ah huh.

Nobody knows nothin', yet except them since their checks cleared - caching. From what I could see in the trailer there's alot of shooting 'em up and explosions so I'm out.

Dude it's the first teaser for a movie that's coming out for over 6 months. The first trailers almost never show anything of substance. And why the hell do you keep bring up JJ Abrams and Bad Robot? They have absolutely nothing to do with this. Damon has written for him, but that really has absolutely nothing to do with Prometheus. And I seriously don't understand what your issue is with Abrams anyway. Sure you might not like shows and movies he's made, but I still don't understand how that brings about this personal grudge you seem to hold against him. There are alot of filmmakers who's stuff I don't like, but that doesn't necessarily make them some sort of embodiment of evil.

Isn't Lindhoff one of the writers of the film - the same guy who wrote Trek '09. Isn't this a Star Trek bullitin board on the planet Earth in the Sol galaxy?

Well duh, its their job...they write films...they get paid for it, its how they make their living.

You do know there were flamethrowers in Alien right...and even an explosion or two.
