Project: Potemkin "Doctor's Orders"

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

Well you all have my personal apology that my acting is a source of disagreement. As I said, we did the role as it was.

And roles are roles.

Have a great weekend, and I am TRYING not take the comments to heart. Seeing as how I am me and not the character.

Renda
I'm sorry you seem to be taking the comments so personally. I'll be sure to keep my thoughts on Potemkin productions to myself in future if they're going to give offense.

Actually, I am having a laugh, and my apology was to any that the character offended.

As for me, it is what it is. As Kirk said. "Don't mince words Bones, tell me what you really think!"

Hey I live life, I laugh and I strive to grow daily in all areas of life.

And as I said, everyone has their own unique opinion.

I am not upset, my feelings are not hurt. I am a pleasant and happy person.. And as I told Randy Landers. "Doctor's Orders" is the CMO who stole Christmas!

If we let every comment spoken about a film or a character or a song we did hurt us? Then we have learned nothing.

I know who I am, and I know what Randy wants in the CMO.

Have a great weekend everyone :) :mallory:

Well that's good then. Intent doesn't always come across well on these pages, my apologies if I misunderstood. :)

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

As you say the written word can be interpreted many ways, which is why I try to choose my written words carefully. I think sometimes it is a matter of regions and countries etc. Being a GRITS (Girl raised in the South) we understand that people not in the South may mis-understand a comment the way a person writes . You cannot see them hear their voice etc.

And Happy Holidays to you as well. :)

From Renda and all my characters..

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

Why should you apologize if the character was meant to be offensive?

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

As the writer of DO, any fault must ultimately lie with me, not the actors. I've never met Renda but she seems to be a terrific person. I'm glad to "know" her online.

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

The whole point of criticism is (hopefully) to stimulate learning and growth, not make people feel bad, and not to assign "fault".

There's no need for apologies or blame, and no one is pointing fingers. I suggested some reasons why it didn't work for me, and pointed out some things I liked, but that's as far as it goes.

Your mileage may vary. :)

I was jesting, ;) :techman: hey I try to lighten the mood if it appears to be going down a dark path. :)

Here's to a great 2011 and a even better 2012 for all Fan productions!

Randy you guys are doing a great job with limited resources, and I am so thankful to be a part of Potemkin, even if my Character "Appears" to be the Ghost of Christmas nightmare!

I love the Character personally and I am looking forward to the other scripts etc.

Thank you so much. I welcome your (and all posters here) critique.

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

I also should have said, be proud of the fact that you actually completed something and put it out there for people to see. Many people fall long before they pass that point. :)

I loved the script, we had a great time shooting it, the Character is solid and opinionated that is clear. LOL...

I am happy with "Doctor's Orders" , and having a great laugh reading the comments.

:rommie::bolian: And I believe Surak says it best:

Ma etek natyan — teretuhr lau etek shetau weh-lo'uk do tum t'on. We have differences. May we, together, become greater than the sum of both of us.

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

I don't think any apologies are necessary for the portrayal of a fictional character in a fictional universe. Maura Drake is exactly as I envision her. She's caustic to the point that she's perceived as a bitch, and that's how I wanted her played. Renda, who is quite charming in real life, did a perfect job capturing the character as intended. Dave did a terrific job scripting Drake's vile nature. They're to be commended for the work they did; it could not have been easy for either of them to come up with and portray such a thoroughly unlikeable character.

(BTW Dr. Lazarus in OUTLAND was NOT a nice person. Marshal O'Niel had to threaten to kick her ass to get her to do her job. It was not an idle threat. She was redeemed at the end of the movie.)

SPOILER NOTICE****
In the second season, there are two Drake vignettes planned. One is with Grigory and Drake in a precarious situation, and you'll see a "Comeuppance" of sorts.

The other episode is "The Lucky One" which is where you will see a redemption of Dr. Drake. We were hoping to film "The Lucky One" this past summer in Birmingham in a green-screened set, but sadly real-life got in the way. (We've even got the virtual set created by Michael Zock for this episode.) We're hoping that Tim and Renda will be able to film the episode for our second season.

In real life, you meet some assholes. Sometimes, these assholes just remain assholes. And sometimes, circumstances come up and you learn that these assholes have a reason for being the way they are, and even rarer, sometimes you realize they're not the assholes you think they are. Maura Drake is going to be an example of this.
END SPOILERS ****

Unlike in TOS and the TOS Movie Era, our CMO is not a regularly appearing character. She's in one vignette this season. If you want to decline to watch our fan film series based on one character in one vignette, then it's your loss. Frankly, I think you'll be missing something special, especially with stories like "Delivery," "Miscommunication" and "The Night the Stars Fell from the Sky" coming up this season.

Is Maura Drake an interesting character? Clearly from the commentary this morning, she has provoked a lot of interest and skepticism and criticism and that is always welcome.

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

Personally I don't think it's that hard to create and portray such characters who are unpleasant. What is hard is to use those characters in such a way as to make their behaviour purposeful. While I'm sure she has a purpose for being the way she is, and there is more going on, that simply doesn't come across here.

Dr Lazarus was indeed not a very nice person. But she never came across as *just* that. There was subtext, a sense of something more beneath the surface. I don't feel that was present here, but like I said, YMMV. :)

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

No worries! We appreciate the feedback. The problem with a series of vignettes with a new series is that I think we don't always succeed in the subtext of the situation. We'll need to work on that.

I know that feeling all too well. :)

Randy Tim and I working out schedules for peeps to get that one filmed, now that RL has slowed down for Tim. BH Networks really stepped up the events they had to video lol...

I am excited to be working with such great people and wonderful scripts. It is great to be Queen Malifalcent lmao on Potemkin.

And Maura would just smirk and say. "Just because my 'Airbags' are higher up on my anatomy, does not mean I am a beache . When a male takes no guff off officers skipping their physicals, he promoted to Admiral and given a medal. When a Woman calls an officer out for derelections of duty to get his Physical before assuming duty? She is called a Beache. So buckle your seat belts Boys it's gonna be a bumpy ride."

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

Hindsight is 20/20. I think a brief exchange between the cadet and the lieutenant after the doctor and Delaney left might have explained things a bit more...

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

The question of intent goes more to protocol than anything else. Looking forward to the bumpy ride in that regard.

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

Good on everyone involved for taking the risk in taking this particular direction. If it were guaranteed to succeed it wouldn't be a "risk" would it? That's one of the great things about a fan production: you can try things and see what happens. In this case, I think everyone would agree that the end product and reaction to it weren't quite what everyone was hoping for, but no one is getting fired, no one's reputation is ruined and the show will go on. As I've always said part of my enjoyment of fan productions is seeing how the producers adapt the hard earned lessons that always come their way. Keep going!

Re: Project: Potemin "Doctor's Orders"

Oh, we will. We've already got six more in the can...er, computer. Five vignettes and a very lengthy episode. We've got several scripts for the second season which we'll begin filming next month. I look forward any feedback we received, good or bad, and we'll see how it affects our production. :)
