Amazon UK say DTI Forgotten History cancelled...

I had an email earlier this evening advising me that the release of this novel has been canceled (note it did not say not postponed).

I hope this is a mistake and not a problem - i.e. conflicting with plans for the new movie - leading to completely pulling the release.

Christopher has already had this happen once - let's hope this isn't a repeat.

Christopher ?

I haven't heard anything about it. In fact, I'm in the middle of proofreading the galleys.

Glad to hear it Christopher !

Sorry to worry you - if there's nothing deeper happening I'd put it down to a technical error from Amazon UK.

I'll leave it a few days and try to re-preorder it...

You have to love a forum where a rumour is squashed by an author with the prospective book in hand. :techman:

Man, that would have been a terrible way for Christopher to find out if it had been true. :ouch:

That would indeed have sucked. Unlikely as it was (especially as it was an email from a UK company), it was, however, a possibility.

It's good to have this forum so that such things can be quashed...

This is normal behavior for Amazon UK, and it has to do with the way their inventory system works. The short explanation is that they don't have the book in stock because it hasn't been published yet or they haven't received it yet in their warehouses, but one of their databases says they should have it in stock, and so they decide that it must have been canceled. This sounds completely goofy, and it is completely goofy, but it's how their system functions.

i tried ordering RLL in my local independent bookshop and they told me it wasn't out til february.

i bought RLL off the amazon marketplace. i got it from the Book Depository.

This is also how they get around their pre-order price guarantee - if many people have pre-ordered a book at a substantial discount, they can just "cancel" it, remove the listing, then re-add it at a higher price.

It looks like you're right - I've checked and it is now available to preorder again at nearly full price ! That is a pretty poor way to behave - I have complained via their webform (I can't find an email address for them) and am waiting to hear back from them.

Anyone else come across this - is it legal ?
