What don't you like about Christmas?

No, I knew you weren't serious, but there are people (I'm looking at you, Governor of Rhode Island) that do insist on calling it that.
It also happened in Toronto a few years back. It raised quite a stink in the press, on radio talk shows and on TV. The backlash was very vocal. Even Jewish and Muslim groups were speaking up to the tune of "We never asked for this! Any damn fool knows it's a Christmas Tree."

The doofuses at City Hall changed their tune real fast.

So the main thing I've learned from this thread (other than Kestra's shocking latent racism) is that Christians get really, really upset if they aren't allowed to dominate and control every aspect of winter solstice celebrations. Excuse me, Christmas celebrations. No other faiths or holidays are valid, so anyone claiming otherwise should just fuck off, eh?

Not what most people are saying. But if thats what you get out of it then at least you got something this year. :)

If people don't want to call it Christmas tree, which is how it's widely known wherever I've been, I don't know what else to call it. It's certainly not a menorah.
If the political correct euphemizing and "smoothing" of language were limited to such trivial issues it would not matter. But in times of "humanitarian war", "postraumatic stress disorder" and "Native Americans" (And white folks are "Cultural Americans" or what? At least the word "Indian" is an eternal testament to white man's stupidity.) we really gotta think twice about whether we really want such decaffeinated language.

You also gave me a buttload of semi-entertaining holiday threads. :p

One thing I'm really hating this year is the dreary rainy weather we've got presently, and that we're likely not to get a white Christmas, er, white December 25th day off. :sigh:

For what it's worth, I am 100% atheist and couldn't give a shit about any of this one way or another. It's just a really, really boring week at work, and I felt like arguing.

I have the day off, and am entertaining myself here in between bouts of being productive.

"Please accept with no obligation, expressed or implied, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2012, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. This is, of course, neither to suggest nor imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country; also, this is not to imply that "America," as noted herein, is the only America in the Western Hemisphere. May these heartfelt wishes be received with equal intensity regardless of distribution of individual wealth, documented carbon footprint, or perceived social privilege among the wishees addressed herein. This wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual preference of the wishee."

What about my pets, you excluded them. You are wicked and evil, you wanna press a human-centric agenda! ;)
Seriously, this is the best thing I ever read to illustrate what's wrong with postmodern identity politics and political correctness.

This. ^

:)

Simple, conveys the sentiment without assuming or requiring that everyone share your own beliefs. Why is that so hard to understand?
