My TOS Romulan Bird-Of-Prey by AMT

trekriffic

Commander
Red Shirt
Haven't posted here in awhile and I read on another thread that this is the 45th anniversary of the original "Balance of Terror" episode so thought I'd post these pics of my latest build.

This model took about 9 months from start to finish and is heavily accurized to more closely resemble the proportions of the studio model.
It was lengthened and the wing angle was changed as far as length and angle. Windows and round sensor ports were added using brass tubing.
The model has 4 "button" style batteries under the port hangar bay hatch powering 10 LEDs and also can be switched to run off an external battery box.
The starboard stern hangar bay is fully detailed and lit and two "Talon" fighters were added-one with wings extended for in flight and one with folded wings for inclusion in the hangar bay.
The fighters were of my own design and scratch built, as such they are purely conjectural.

Here's a video I made for a friend over on The Tholian Web forum:

"Balance of Terror" is my favorite original Star Trek episode and this model was a real labor of love on my part.
I hope you all enjoy the pics and the video.

Wow, beautiful work there.

I also note that you included one of those little Flash Gordon-y shuttles that were shown in the blueprints. I approve. Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful work there.

Is that the "original" AMT kit? I have one from around 1969 and had to do the lip edge to get the right effect.

Alas, I never got mine finished. But hopefully one of these days.

Actually, it's the reissue that came out earlier this year. The new kit included the plasma torpedo emitter and two options for the nacelle domes-hemispherical or "doorknob" style.

I made several major modifications to the kit which included redoing the wings; extending the stern; cupola aft angle reshaping; lighting of engines, hangar, and windows/sensors; hangar bay and battery compartment construction; and adding the stepped angled rim with styrene strip and sheet.
The model is rather heavy for its size as I reinforced the wings with brass bar and the dorsal fin has a core of brass sheet. The batteries also contribute to the weight.
The decals are JT Graphics and are rust colored compared to the orangy, cartoonish kit decals.

Thanks for the compliment!

Are you referring to these blueprints?

I like to think my design is a little more Romulan raptorish than the one shown in the LCARS drawings.
I can't deny it does display certain characteristics of those Flash Gordon rockets with a little Starfleet thrown in.
This drawing by Matt Jefferies of a discarded early Federation shuttle design was another source of inspiration:

You're welcome. Yep, that's the one. Didn't realize until now just how different those two designs were. Have my own set of the blueprints - original publication that I had laminated many years ago (along with a bunch of other Trek blueprints).

Oh man... I don't suppose there's any way you could scan them and share them with me? I'd love to see more of your BOP blueprints. I'd imagine not though especially if they're copyrighted.

I've seen these. Is that the complete set then? I

As far as I can tell, that set matches the one I've got at home (somewhere), so I believe that to be complete.
