When will it click and I'll find out my role in this world?

FWIW, ten years ago when I met my husband's brother, he was floundering around quite a bit. He tried the traditional college route but was unmotivated and spent a lot of money on drugs, ended up coming home to live back with the parents and go to community college. I remember him going through several different tracks and he just seemed kind of lost. Really good guy, but compared to my husband (who went to college, graduated, got a good paying job out of undergrad) I think he felt inferior.

He's been working retail for quite some time now and he's moved up the ladder. He's good at what he does. Really good, in fact. Everyone likes him and he's making good money. He married a great woman and they have a kid, and he just seems really happy. It's been awesome to see the change in him and the self-confidence he has now.

Everyone has different paths. Retail is it for some people, and you can be quite successful if you have the right talents. My father-in-law never graduated college but was in management for some large retail companies and did very well for himself.

Que, Sera, Sera. Or whatever will be, will be. No doubt many of us have thought at one time or other. I'm in a crap job, I wish I could find that someone special to settle down with etc..

For some these things come easier than for others. I work in retail, though if you asked me if I would be doing that when I was at college many moons ago. I would have said I wouldn't be working in retail. But such is life. I'm resaonable good at my job, and have been transferred several times for my skills as well as using them to train new colleagues when we have taken over/merged with other companies. So if I had to put a number on it would be something along the lines of I've been invovled in the training of circa 2% of employees in the compnay. (which employess some 115 000)

Wish I could help, but I'm a weird anomaly. I knew in 7th grade what I was going to do, and here I am 25 years later doing exactly that!

There's exactly two questions you need to ask yourself:

"What the fuck do I want to do?"

and

"Why the fuck am I not doing it?"

and the solution presents itself.

With that amount of fucking, I'm guessing it's either going to be porn or animal husbandry.

Better to figure out how the world should revolve around you.
I'm the iguana and I wholeheartedly agree with this.

Primaries are only a month away; I hope you've registered your Presidential candidacy. :p

Can you think of a better dream to come true?

I never knew you were so into animals...

Well I like chicks and boobies.

I'm 30 years old and I work in a shitty part time retail job. At one point I was aiming to turn it into a career. Then that all seemed to disappear and now I'm left wondering what my role in this world really is.

Soon I'm going to move back in with the parents so I can go back to school and pursue something worthwhile. But what then? What if I end up in that role and still don't feel like this is what I am meant to do? It's all very frustrating.

Is there any moment where it just clicked for you?

There wasn't a single moment where it clicked but there was a fairly short time frame where it clicked. I spent my entire undergraduate career not knowing what I wanted to do.

Finally, I found something that I loved doing and was marketable. That's really the key. It's a give and take between you and the market. Ideally, you find something that you enjoy. And, it should be something that the market rewards you for. So, the answer will be different for everyone. And, the balance between the 2 will be different. Some people will want to lean more towards what they enjoy at the expense of the market side. Others will do what the market rewards regardless of how little they may enjoy it.

I was lucky because what I enjoy is also fairly marketable, lots of skills in scientific research.

I don't think anybody is "meant" to do anything. You do things. Sometimes they work out; sometimes they don't. I am often restless, and I honestly can never see myself settling into a career. Just the idea of doing one thing for the rest of my life is appalling to me. My dad has been at the same place for the last 30 years. That's longer than I've been alive! I can't even fathom doing something for that amount of time.

"Meant" I'm not sure about. But, there are things that you'll enjoy doing and if you can get paid for doing them, great! That's probably as close to "meant" to do as you can get. In that sense, I'm "meant" to be doing my job. I enjoy it, I've got an advanced degree in it, I'm good at it, and I get paid well for it.

Now, the idea of staying at the same place for an entire career is pretty much outmoded. I forget the statistics, but people on average change their line of work multiple times during their careers. This is especially true of the more talented and created people with skills, they'll be fishing around and getting offers from various places.

Yeah. I look at retail, and I do love it. I enjoy interacting with customers on a daily basis and being part of a team. I honestly enjoy it, but the trouble is I can't make it work for me. I'm a good worker, just not "good enough" for the higher ups.

So I suppose you could say I felt I was meant to work retail, until recently when I realized it just wasn't paying the bills.

For what it's worth, I am going back to school for something I honestly want to do, teach.

For what it's worth, I started a "regular 9-5" job at the beginning of the year, and I fucking hate the schedule. The job is fine, but I can't stand the hours. I would much rather go back to working nights and weekends.

Some "regular" jobs have flexible hours. It's nice.
