New book: "Star Wars vs Star Trek"

I noticed this tonight, when picking up my held copy of "Rise Like Lions":

"Star Wars vs Star Trek: Could the Empire Kick the Federation's Ass?, and Other Galaxy-Shaking Enigmas" is by Matt Forbeck (Adams Media, 2011) and has forewords by both Jeremy "Boba Fett" Bulloch and Tim "Tuvok" Russ.

It has five sections, each led off by a trivia quiz, then various SW identities/places/artifacts are matched against ST identities/places/artifacts in amusing, fictitious scenarios. Results are tallied and the final score revealed at the end.

Forbeck has extensive credits as a designer/writer of media tie-in computer games and CCG sets.
 
My wife bought me this book and it ended up being my bathroom reading material, which is appropriate for such a crappy book.

Never mind the typos and errors, the bulk of the material is Star Wars character meets Star Trek character, a misunderstanding occurs, they attack each other and the author arbitrarily picks a winner. :rolleyes:

Don't waste your money.

Considering the topic is an oft-started debate on BBSs and fan mags, it's a great idea for a book.

Not so arbitrary. Forbeck goes to considerable length discussing strengths and weaknesses. He's managed to find a fresh idea for hardcopy ST trivia material.

There's been a copy of this in my local Waterstones for months, now. So I don't know how "new" it really is. I had a flick through and wasn't impressed - but then, the only way I'd have liked it was a 10 - nil slaughter of Wars by Trek:D
 
I haven't read it, but the cynic in me says it's not going to be a fair fight. See...Trek at least TRIES to ground itself in realism in regards to future technology--albeit, only to a certain extent. It's an "illusion", to be sure...but the illusion is there.

The unfortunate side effect...we're handicapped. In the bad way.

Star Wars doesn't even try to ground itself like that. It's a space fantasy, where anything that "looks cool" goes--not science fiction, which has the air of "scientific possibility".

Lightsabers indeed. Scientifically ridiculous (what makes that light-blade stop in mid-air?)...but it would have an advantage--because it's just magic, not Sufficiently Advanced Technology.
 
it's complicated and to do with magnetic fields IIRC why the sabre blade stops.

besides, anyone knows Starfleet could kick the Empire's ass, the Empire's biggest ship, the Executor Super Star Destroyer, had it's shield generator destroyed by a fucking A-Wing's laser cannons. imagine what havoc a Defiant class ship could wreak with a few quantum torpedoes, photon torps and those pulse-phaser cannons.

and that's without bringing in a 'big' gun like the E-D or the double E.

Ah well, interesting as I find crossovers, this whole subject does (IMO) verge on religious debate. No doubt there are some Star Wars fans who take it as an article of faith that the UFP and allies would not stand a chance against the Empire.
 
I looked this book over on whim and it was pretty rough. It did not seem to me that the author was that deeply versed in the lore of either universe. Robert April get overlooked on a 'quiz', for example.

I sensed a bit of a Star Wars bias, but he did hit it hard on things like using Parsecs as a unit time instead of distance. I'm a fan of both Wars and Trek so moments like that were fun, but they were way too infrequent.
 
It just reminds me that we don't see the Federation too much and it's awesome technological space stations and such. The first movie and the series toched on some things but TNG and all the rest were practically devoid of establishing the scope of the Federations powers. Star Wars showed off alot of technologically advanced worlds where Treks worlds were mostly barron waste lands and jungles and caves etc. TMP was the only time we saw 2160 Earth? It was too far removed. I could see Spock with a light saber though under his vulcan robes. Part of a trade agreement peace treaty.

Hmm...you do have a point there. And of course...the Enterprise A could blow up the Death Star via the same method they used to destroy Chang's ship--the "tailpipe", aka Thermal Exhaust Port....


Still...just look at YouTube, and search for those "Star Wars v. Star Trek" vids. A pathetic majority have Star Wars winning by absurd margins. You wouldn't believe the nonsense resulting from the bias, to the effect of the small rebel fighters destroying Kirk's Enterprise, Picard's Enterprise, AND Sulu's Excelsior.
 
It was a bit misleading in that one of the 'vs' that I wanted to see didn't happen, namely could a Cardassian beat a Chazrach. (I suppose it was picked for alliterative appeal but then dropped from the book for reasons of obscurity since most fans have not heard of either).

I must express my surprise, Legate, that you should doubt the outcome. Need I remind you that the Union Fleet runs on order, discipline, sacrifice, and dried rokat fillets, while the Chazrach lack even the rudimentary concepts of such virtues? They have to be controlled by their masters like lobotomized Jem'Hadar, having no sense of duty or national pride. Cardassia's finest would slay these beasts without effort; they are mere stock. I must caution you that irresponsible speculation as to other potential outcomes will be classified as dissent, and may lead to penalties. Resume your duties.

Note that I merely expressed regret for the lack of such confrontation that would have easily proven the superiority of both the Cardassian military and the Order. I cast no doubts upon the strength of the Fleet just the necessity of such a worthless challenge to Cardassian cunning.

Now the Bothans on the other hand...

I am pleased to see your loyalties reaffirmed with such haste, Legate. Rest assured that this body will file into the archives only the preliminary notice flagged Level Red Six, and not a full cautionary report on your potential risk to fleet morale. Your service and dedication are noted and appreciated by all loyal Cardassians.

As for the Bothans, reports indicate that they are tied up in the Romulan theatre at present, and will likely remain so for the foreseeable future. According to the latest reports from the Order, Vice Proconsul T'Politician is believed responsible for the assassination of clanmaster BigFat'Lya. How convenient for our interests...
