Christopher Lloyd must have had a really good agent or just been lucky

Over the past week or so I've watched the following films: The Back to the Future trilogy, the two Addams Family Movies, and just tonight I watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Not movies picked for any particular reason, just at random (well, I mean when you watch the first BTTF, you have to follow it up with the other two. Same goes for Addams Family). But one thing I didn't realize till just a bit ago is that all of those movies have Christopher Lloyd in common.

Now these are movies that are standing the test of time, people like me still watch them and enjoy them, and I'm sure we'll be watching them still 30 years from now too. When you toss in Lloyd's role as Kruge from Star Trek 3, you realize that he was in a lot of high profile movies around the 80s and early 90s.

Adding into the mix his memorable role from Taxi, and you gotta be wondering how he got so lucky back then.

I'm not sure how much of it is luck, and how much of it is just keen business sense. I find him very appealing. I got to talk to him a little bit in Chicago a year or so ago, and he came off as very shrewd and professional (but very polite and funny). He seems to know how to sell himself.

Also gotta factor into his role in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Had forgotten about that one.

he was in "suburban commando" as well. it was one of many hulk hogan (now hollywood hogan right?) in the early 90's. i think his best line from that one was: "I was frozen today!"
honestly, it's tough to beat that one

If there was any piece of luck in his career, it was getting that first guest role in Taxi. He was so impressive in that, that they turned it into a regular gig-- and that's what led to everything else.

But it's really more about talent and charisma-- he's got loads of both.

An odd aside, the plump girl from Stacked went on to be a supporting character in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where she (Her character) spends a respectable amount of time half naked rolling around on top of a half naked Danny DeVito.

I love Christopher Lloyd. It was nice to see him turn up on Fringe recently.

As to the movies you've been watching, I introduced my 12 year old nephew to the Back to the Future Trilogy over the summer and he liked them quite a bit so they are definitely holding up!

Some of it is probably the luck that just goes with the territory of being in a creative field, but I'd say most of it is due to the fact that he was (and still is, I suppose) a versatile actor of consider talent.

I think it was part agent, who naturally finds the roles and suggests them, but more part his selection of the roles. He very rarely took a "pay check job", (Suburban Commando probably the one blemish) or his good roles stood out more than whatever poor roles there were because he brought so much to the performance.

He's really a fantastic actor who always did memorable roles.

(And, no, people. Before you ask he's not the Christopher Lloyd who produced a number of 90s sitcoms. )

He's a great actor.

I love him in an oft-forgotten movie called "Clue", based on Cluedo. He played Prof Plum. Neat little film!

"Cluedo" is the UK version of the game.

Depends on where in the world you live. In the US it's Clue, in the UK it's Cluedo.

I think his talent is making every role interesting. In "Eight Men Out", he plays the retired ballplayer that acts as the go-between between Arnold Rothstein and the crooked White Sox players. Even in what could be seen as a throw away role, he adds a bit of eccentric personality and makes it interesting.

I love it in "Cuckoo's Nest" when Harding tells MacMurphy that most of the patients are there by their own choice and can leave whenever they want, except for Taber (Lloyd) and a few of the chronics, whereupon Lloyd gives a crazy, proud little smile and eyebrow raise.

Lloyd seems to have been on the radar as a character actor in the late '70s; when he popped up on Taxi I remembered him from an episode of Barney Miller. He also has a small but memorable part in The Onion Field, with IIRC a special credit.

I still think his Kruge is incredibly underrated, and one of the strongest Trek movie villains they've ever had.

People like to dismiss it as being too campy or whatever, but I thought he was absolutely PERFECT, and was just as scary and intimidating a presence as Khan in the previous movie.
