2011 NFL Season - A New Game

Here's my totally uneducated playoff seed guess

I don't think my Texans will win out and be 13-3 this year. I do think Leinart will be good enough to win the division and get to the playoffs though. Leinart is walking into a good deal as a backup QB. He's got two excellent RBs, both of whom are also good recievers, two good blocking/catching TEs, and one hell of a reciever since Andre Johnson is coming back. All he has to do is hand the ball off a lot and complete a few roll outs, and maybe toss two or three to AJ to keep the defenses honest.

And we've finally got a good defense for a change. So yeah, the Texans will be in the playoffs this year, I just have no idea how long they'll last once they get there with Hot Tub boy in charge.

Ugh. I don't have NFL Network at home (I don't have cable), so I never watch it. Do they not have enough advertisers for these games?

I have seen the same NFL Network promos on EVERY SINGLE COMMERCIAL BREAK. First, there's the one about the top 5 plays of the week, then there's the one about next week's Thursday game, then there are just general NFL propaganda commercials, etc. I'd rather they just not interrupt the game and never leave the action instead of taking worthless TV timeouts.

They must be losing money hand-over-fist for continuing to allow this Thursday Night Football travesty to continue. The broadcast team/producers are by far the worst in the NFL (NBC's Sunday Night crew is bar none the best), and they could easily make a billion dollars selling the rights to ESPN or ABC.

I'm not an NFL head coach, but I'm curious. Why do the 49ers insist on rushing the ball when they are in 3rd and 18 situations? I've seen them attempt this now at least 3 or 4 times tonight. Do they have that much faith in Frank Gore? Or that little faith in Smith?

I'm in the same boat (well I have cable but not the NFL network), but I've never have understood why they have decided to put these games out of the reach of so many people. Of course one could probably make a similar argument about the monday night games being on ESPN.

Just checked the score on NFL.com, looks like I'm not missing much.

I've often wondered why the coaches go super-conservative in 3rd and long myself. The way the commentators have explained it during some games is simply that the coaches are trying to avoid major mistakes. So rather than trying to throw for the 18 yards, they feel safer running or throwing screens/ short passes and hoping their player can make a big play.

I think the thinking is that a long pass play is a low percentage play with a greater than average risk of turnover. And coaches live in fear of turnovers. So basically you run a safe play, punt the ball and rely on your defense.

I hate 3rd and 20+ yard rushing plays. I don't care about conservative play at this point. I say go for it. Have your guy heave it 20 yards down the field and see if he can make a completion.

Well that was disappointing. Why do I get the feeling now that a lot of the so-called experts are going to come out and say "see, the 49ers finally played someone good and lost" and start getting all braggy about it. Baltimore came out to play and the 49ers looked unprepared. That doesn't take away from what they've accomplished this year and they are still in the drivers seat for the second seed in the NFC.

I will say though there were two really really bad calls in this game. The first was the chop block that negated the touchdown. I've seen players do that so many times that to call it there made me really question the refs. The second was the pass interfarence call on the interception. Ok, so there was some contact, but the dude was playing the ball. I'm not going to say the Refs gave this game to the Ravens, but those two calls were really really iffy in my opinion.

Anyway, good game and the 49ers are still 9-2. That's still damn impressive considering how they were expected to finish.

I initially thought that as well, but on further review I believe the call was correct. He was interfering. The chop block is iffy, but I could see why they threw the flag. It was also unnecessary, I think he would have been able to throw the ball without the chop block.

They want people to watch the NFL Network. If their cable provider doesn't offer it, then they want those people to switch to satellite or pester their cable companies until they start carrying the network. Makes sense to me.

His arm was intentionally(by him) trapped inside the interception. He had no chance of catching it himself and the only way for their arms not to link would have been for the defender to drop the ball on purpose. Technically it might be a fair call but I think both were a bit overzealous.

They probably would have lost anyways with the way their offensive line was playing, but at least two of SF's best moments in the game would have counted for something.

I wonder how well it's working out for them though? Have you seen any numbers on the profitability of the NFL network? Does anyone watch the network except for the live Thursday night games?

I figure between the NFL Network, and the NFL Sunday Ticket, they are slowly moving us towards the point where are all games are going to be either PPV or part of a package that you must pay extra for.

I doubt it. The NFL's contracts with CBS, FOX, NBC and ESPN bring in $3 billion a year.

True PPV NFL would be kind of awesome. But yeah, it's staying as a TV thing for ad revenue. They're never going to give up their 2 hours of commercials every fucking game. NFL Sunday Ticket you get to pay 350 bucks a year for the honor of watching all those commercials

Fucking greedy!

They offerred the NFL Sunday Ticket this year over the PSN for the PS3. I think it was priced at $340 which initially I thought it was kind of high, but broken down over 17 weeks it's like $20 a week and that's not too bad.

But since it was over the internet, and seeing how my internet likes to take a crap every so often, I decided to pass. Plus I heard from some people who had it that there were a lot of technical issues trying to get it to work.

I keep praying for the day when Direct TV's stranglehold on that deal is broken and all cable and satellite providers can offer it. If it was over my cable system, I would grab it in a heartbeat. Of course, you know what they say about that, wish in on hand and shit in the other . . .
