2011 NFL Season - A New Game

Holy Shit... bring Orton back to the Bears. He was pretty decent that year that he led us to the layoffs and then Grossman came in and fucked it all up.

I would say he'd go to Kansas City, but that playoff ship sailed in Week 1.

Word is the Chiefs have put in a claim on Orton, and since they have a worse record than the Bears, their claim takes priority.

I like Orton but I don't know how well he'd pick up Martz's offensive schemes. Yes, the same could be said about some of the other names being tossed about for the Bears to pick up as a backup, but they also don't come with the premium price tag that Orton would.

To be fair, the Bears don't even really run Martz's typical offense at this point, outside of when he starts getting cute and calls fifteen passes in a row or whatever.

The real question would be, could Martz stop being a stubborn asshole and adjust his precious schemes enough for someone like Orton, who's more of a game manager than a great QB?

Seriously? I hadn't heard that. Heard KC was a contender but I didn't actually see them pulling the trigger.

Apologies, when I posted that last night I'd read the rumor elsewhere and didn't take the time to check for a genuine link or source. Apparently waiver claims won't be made public until after the deadline passes later this afternoon.

Sorry! :ouch:

What I'm hearing is that Orton has told potential teams that he won't report for duty for any team other than the Bears. I believe it was NFL.com that was reporting the Bears have definitely put in a claim on him.

ETA: Take that first part with a HUGE grain of salt. Supposedly that originated with Mort Anderson. But I can't confirm that.

This. 100x this.

If the claim about Orton only wanting to join the Bears is true and assuming the Bears want him, I'm curious as to what that means for their QB situation. Obviously the first priority is winning, but I'd be a bit pissed if I were Caleb Hanie since the Bears are bringing in a hired gun who won't be around after this season to start ahead of me.

Martz has this ridiculous hatred of Hanie, and it makes no sense. His dislike of Hanie is why we were subjected to Todd Collins (and remember, it took three quarters of that disaster against Carolina for Hanie to be put in), and why, after Cutler's knee went out in the NFCCG, Collins was the first replacement. Martz will not give that guy a chance for whatever reason.

Double-post: The Chiefs put in a waiver claim on Kyle Orton and grabbed him.

The Bears have signed ... Josh McCown to a one-year contract.

I never thought they'd actually do it. Makes me wonder if they did it just to F with an upcoming opponent (da Bears). Now I guess the ball is in Orton's court. We'll see if any of those prior rumors were true.

I doubt they did it to mess with the Bears -- the Chiefs are, after all, only two games out of first, and their quarterback situation is basically a dumpster fire. He's not a bad pickup for them, especially since he isn't an interception machine.

But ... fucking Christ, Josh McCown. I mean, Martz had him playing in the slot in Detroit.

Why wouldn't the Chiefs do it? They're still in the hunt for the AFC West title and their starting QB is Tyler frakking Palko.

Statistically speaking they are in it, but in reality they're not. This team is a real mess right now and it's more than just the QB position. He's an upgrade from Palko no doubt, but I still don't think they're going to win many more games. It irritates me to no end that they're spending extra $ now, but they wouldn't spend it during the FA period to try to bring in some quality depth.

The odds are Cassel is out after this season, so it could be that the Chiefs decided to take a flyer on a guy of the same age (Cassel and Orton are both 29) to see if Orton could fit in the offense.

If you were in any other division, you might have a point. But with the AFC West, it is pretty safe to say that every team is still in it until they mathematically aren't. Oakland's Oakland, they need to prove they can actually pull it off. I still refuse to trust Denver. San Diego has been pretty damn ugly for a few weeks now. All is really needed is the right thing to happen for any of the four teams to make the leap into the front. I'm not thrilled about the Chiefs getting a better QB (not to mention a QB who's been with Denver all season and for 5 weeks of this Tebow Transition), but I'm still hopeful.

I'd be surprised to see the Chargers win a game the rest of this season.

As a faithful Chargers hater, that makes me happy.

 Have you seen the Chiefs schedule? 2 games down with 6 to go. And the next 4 games are Steelers, @ Bears, @ Jets, and then the Packers. Orton or no Orton, the team who has scored 16 points combined in their last 3 games, it's extremely doubtful they'll win any of those games. And if Oakland just wins one during that stretch, then the Chiefs are 3 down with 2 to go.

Division winners? Yeah not so much. That ship sailed when they lost to Miami and Denver back to back.

I wonder why David Garrard hasn't been getting more attention on these openings.
