I try not to think about the fact that when I started reading Batman comics I was younger than Robin and now I'm heading toward Alfred/Gordon territory!!!!

Wasn't Gordon de-aged as a side effect of the recent DC reboot?

Also is it really necessary to have yet another NuTrek whinfest thread aren't there like a hundred of those things all frequented by the same people who just complain about the same things over and over again?

Somehow I had missed r2 in trek xi. That seems insulting. It was clear from the movie in general that jj is a sw kinda guy. Buncha action sequences threaded together. Hm.

R2 was among the wreckage over Vulcan. The Millenium Falcon was amongst the fleet that engaged the Borg at the start of "Star Trek: First Contact", too.

The second film will be the true test of just how popular this version really is, since the curiosity factor will be way down from the last one, i.e., we already have a pretty good idea what sort of movie it's going to be.

"Stalwart," to me means dependable; perhaps my understanding of the word is incorrect, though. NuKirk does grow into that, which is a main point of the story, of course. He's young. We'll see how he goes in the next installment in 2014 or whenever it comes out.

It's what it means to me, too. I think nuKirk has a lot of potential in all directions, but he was already what I'd call stalwart from the moment he took over the Enterprise. And he's not angsty. Edward Cullen is angsty.

I don't like the NuKirk. He is like my least favorite character from that film. But I happen to like STXI. I was oblivious to Star Trek back then so I was a little lost at times watching it for the first time. It did grow on me afterwards. Tragically it stopped growing on me after I saw TOS. I was surprised by the fact that the original Kirk, the real Kirk is actually an extremely likable individual.

I can see some similarities in STXI to Star Wars and I don't mind it, since I also happen to like the original Star Wars. To be honest though there is too much needless, overlong action in this film (come on you don't have the luxury of 10 hours for character development so please don't waste 5 minutes on a meaningless barfight). I guess it's just me. I lose focus all the time watching action scenes, unless they serve some purpose or showcase performers physical abilities like horsemanship, martial arts skills such as a daring drop kick etc. Hopefully there will be more character developments, way less action, way less special effects, and most importantly a better NuKirk next time.

What do you all think about oldKirk's good-guy hero archetype being a bit boring and cliche for postmodern times? Interesting thought.

I don't know. It worked in the recent Captain America. One of the reasons I really liked the film.
